The anti's war is on tobacco period. We pipe smokers are a very small group in the world of tobacco users. Their method is to divide and destroy. I wouldn't advise being so quick to throw RYO smoker's to the wolves in the hope they will get their fill and not come after us. They will come, and there will be fewer people to fight them off. Just my 2 cents

I am also a pipe smoker who enjoys a shag cut burly, "Cherokee Original Blend" in a pipe. It is labeled pipe tobacco but most would call it RYO. I call it smoking tobacco and it goes great in a pipe. It comes in the big 1 lb zip-lock bag and is sold in most RYO shops.

This is no victory, just the sound of the wolves getting a little closer to the door. Just another nail in the tobacco coffin.

This was my take as well, but I didn't want to rain on the parade. I think it's also sad that the destruction of these people's livelihoods came on the back of a highway bill.

I was talking to a friend in Rhode Island last night who I used to trade cigars for high line pipes. He told me he is out of the pipe tobacco business altogether. They taxed him right out business a few years ago and it is the same story state after state. Within 5 years, you will see them tax the internet sellers and put them out of business also.
There is eventually going to be a huge black market for tobacco products, and organized crime will lead the way. If you can afford it, you should think about stocking up now for the rest of your life because prices are going to go insane. My plan is to have around 50 pounds cellared by the end of the year, I am a little over half way there.

The "we will hang together or hang alone" argument probably won't work, the majority don't smoke cigs and have a loved one that they wish would quit, sin taxes are here to stay and the best you can do is draw the distinction between cigar/pipe smoking and cigarettes....and lobby lobby lobby your government rep. Thats my Canadian point of view...$30 for a small tin of frog morton so I know what it's like to "hang together" with the cig smokers.

they may not be coming for us today but they are coming, make no mistake. If the 20th century taught us anything, it was that radical reformers -- be they politicians, petty bureaucrats or military dictators -- are never satisfied with just one victory.

A while back, there was a RYO store that got shut down in Cali...I didn't even know they existed...

I'll tell ya what really dusts me, people losing their jobs in these times right now. I make it a point to buy from my local shop, but sadly I wonder how much longer they'll be there. And cigrmaster is right, if this stuff comes to pass, have your cabinets stocked and hidden.
