What is a dictionary??
First necro bump on my vacation....
Mrs. O'Leary was smoking a bowl, milking the cow, when an ember hit a teat, and then the cow kicked over the lantern. Problem solved.

I don't care what the facts show, the cow story is forever engrained in the public consciousness.

One way or the other, I’m sure that the end result was roast beef!

Just a thought, though, looking at this through electrical age blinders, Chicago would have been dark at night and having a direct line of sight to the fire’s origin would not be necessary when you see it reflecting off other surfaces.

So let me get this straight... Mrs. O'Leary owned a cow, which had a peg-leg and it smoked a pipe?!?
Peg-leg, eh? Sound like the cow fancied itself a Pirate; therefore, I suspect the cow was smoking Black Frigate.
Just a theory. - Sherm Natman

Having recently re-read a few Sherlock Holmes tales, I'd love to read the report and how it's author came up with his conclusions. Even if Sullivan lied, was misquoted, or mistaken about the circumstances of when he saw the fire - - that doesn't mean he started it.
