The Peterson you're looking to buy is a very nice pipe, but a word of caution, it is a P-lip pipe. P-lips are very different from standard fishtail pipes in that they direct the smoke towards the roof of your mouth. Some people like them, some people hate them. Myself, I have 14 Petersons currently, half of them are P-lips, so I guess you could say I like them equally as well as fishtails. One advantage to them is that they help with tongue bite, so if you tend to smoke fast and hot you might really like a P-lip.

Good lookin bulldog there! But, you might want to try the Stanwell Featherweight series. I've been eyeing those pipes for some time now, they're all very light. If the retailer does not have the weight listed, be sure to ask! I like to clench also, but never really paid attention to the weight of a pipe when picking one out. Live and learn

I think you'll like a Peterson, a Savenelli, and/or a Stanwell. Good reminder on the P-Lip on the Peterson. I

own one P-Lip and like it, but generally I prefer the standard fishtail bit. With Savenelli's, be aware most come

with filters. Most pipe smokers in the U.S. prefer unfiltered, and you can smoke Sav's with an adaptor without

a filter, or just without a filter, but you can buy a few, like the Oscar Lucite series or unfinished pipes without

filters (Savenellis) so keep that in mind. If you go after a Stanwell, I'd try for a Danish made version, still

available from Cup O Joes among other places. The Italian made ones are fine, but Danish are probably the

classic item. Others would steer you toward estate pipes, and that's another discussion, but if you do that,

start with one that has been professionally cleaned and repaired (if necessary) from some place like

smokingpipes.com. There are a few pointers. Good luck!

I will repeat my standard advice: Smoke the best tobacco in the best pipes you can afford. With your plan to buy several cobs to flesh out your rotation, you are off to a good start. Take your time, and go for quality over quantity. (I wish I was younger and just starting out and had access to all the things we have now!)
Amen ! :puffpipe:

I ended up purchasing a Peterson! Small mistake on my part though, I accidentally ordered a filtered pipe. The two I was looking at were very similar in appearance and I just clicked and went. Honestly though, it doesn't bother me at all. The difference a good pipe makes is amazing. I also ordered a Dunhill sampler and a tin of Christmas cheer, as well as a free Peterson tin for ordering a Pete pipe. Can I get an adapter for Petersons? I would like to try my new baby without the filter.

I have two Savinelli's and one Peterson. Both are way, way , way better than a basket pipe.

Good stuff Ty! That Dunhill Sampler is a good buy.
Don't worry about filter. I'd just pop that bad boy out and smoke it. I've got a few Peterson's now and I've been very pleased with all of them.

Slightly off topic question concerning a tobacco I got. I received a tin of Peterson 3 P's and to my surprise, it came as a tightly compressed block of tobacco. I tried to peel away layers but wanted to consult you all before I got too far in and ruined it. Am I separating this tobacco the right way, or should I beat on it with a hammer for a bit?
