Having lived in Colorado for three years I am very familiar with the “If it’s from the US it is bigger, better……..and cheaper!” concept. And I agree - I have a large number of US blends open right now and I wouldn’t be without them. But I also have blends from emergent (and emerging) European blenders, like Motzec (“Strang” etc), HU-Tobacco (“Director’s Cut”, “Fayyum Kake” etc) and now Glynn Quelch’s GQ Tobaccos (of which I suspect his “Askwith Kake” may become the most famous).
I reported on HU Tobaccos about a year ago (see thread “Watch Out Mr Pease, There is a New Kid on the Block”). And how true! You only need read the reviews from highly-respected American reviewers. The same can now be said of the emerging GQ Tobaccos – see reviews by Jiminks, who has already tasted more tobaccos than anyone I know, from either side of the pond, and who has wide-ranging tastes and an open mind.
IMO there is now a “New, New Kid on the Block” and it is important to appreciate that Glynn's burgeoning reputation, like that of Motzec and HU-Tobacco, came about only by word-of mouth – one piper to another – rather than by the glitzy pre-release publicity/marketing that we continue to see from the likes of G.L.Pease (and I do enjoy many of his blends).
I have no affiliation with any of these European brands, but as has been said above Glynn will ship to the US AND his sample bags (£2.50) are inexpensive. I would encourage anyone to try them before pouring cold water on some very special pipe baccy-tasting experiences.
