@doctorbob, you stirred up my PAD and made me want another Chimney pipe. :?
Now look what you did, I pulled the trigger on a beautiful virgin chimney/stack pipe I've been looking at for a while. It's now mine and on the way. :puffpipe:

Smoke the tobacco crispy dry. Then use gentle sips. I smoke all my tobaccos like that, but it will transform the experience with a stacked bowl.
I know some claim they get more flavour from smoking some tobacco when it is more moist, especially certain SG/GH offerings, and they perhaps do; but in my experience the difference is negligible at best and in the vast majority of tobaccos, I get more flavour from smoking very well dried, crispy tobacco. The hassles of smoking more moist tobacco outweigh any hesitation to drying it prior to smoking. This is evident in any bowl shape, but most certainly the case when smoking a tall bowl like a stack.

I don't know if they're technically stacks but I have two pipes that have a smaller bowl diameter and are 2 1/2 to 3" chamber depth. I've found those are good with Virginias, particularly McClelland, as the sweet Virginia caramelizes. The further down the bowl, the sweeter the smoke. I've also enjoyed Triple Play and Jack Knife Ready Rubbed in them.

I've made myself about 12 stacks and I love 'em. As said, the secret is drier tobacco and scrape the ash every so often. I like the way they seem to concentrate the flavor. Standard wooden match works fine.

Doctorbob. Look what you made me do. I picked up two Stacks at the Chicago show because of this post. Both virgin stains, my favorite, one smooth and one rusticated. I’ve got them good and broken in. Now this has become the spring of LONG slow smokes. I prefer to fold and stuff Virginia flakes in them.
How is yours coming along?

npod, I really like those stacks more than the purely cylindrical ones, and it looks like they might insulate the heat a little better too, but visually among stacks they're a whole new day.

Who made those Neal? Love that blasting!

The left is Tom Eltang. He only puts out 2-3 virgins a year (straight from the horses mouth). The right is Jon Vesterholm https://www.danishpipeshop.com/l/Pipes/Vesterholm-Pipes-. He is a relatively new Danish carver, I am very fond of his work! The stuff he brought to Chicago was impressive. He is advancing rapidly.
