Recently I loaded my first bowl of Peterson My Mixture 965 in my favorite MM Emerald. I really enjoyed the tobacco and loved the taste, then on the 2nd bowl I discovered I didn't care for the smell. A week later and the pipe still smells like it no matter what, even Nutty Irishman smells like 965 in the emerald.

I ordered a new Emerald today and gave the stinking 965 and pipe to a friend that will smoke anything.

Sad to say goodbye to such a wonderful pipe, over the past 5+ years we have had many memorable morning sunrise and coffee smokes as well as evening sunset and bourbon ones.

I haven’t had MM965 in a long time, but I do remember it being a very strong but classic latakia blend. Some people smoke it as their everyday smoke, so they don’t worry about ghosting. Some will dedicate a pipe to similar blends. And, others will rinse out their pipes with water to try to keep ghosts at bay.
Sometimes I enjoy a ghost if I plan the next smokes to compliment the ghost.
I’m sorry that you felt that you ruined the pipe. What blends do you prefer over MM965?

I lean towards Virginias, and English Oriental Blends, Petersons Standard Mix, Maltese Falcon, Blockade runner, GLP Mongomery ect...,
This was the first time I've had a strong Lakakia blend, and I liked the flavor, but couldn't get over the smell afterwards.

965 does have a uniquely pungent aroma. I smoke a tin occasionally but only in briars dedicated to heavy Latakia mixtures and the ghost isn't much of an issue. I can see a cob getting permeated with that and it having some staying power. It isn't called 9stinks5 for nothin'.

I haven't had MM965 in years, but I don't remember it being a tobacco that would cause such ghosts. Unless you smoked it regularly in the same pipe. As someone that smokes Balkan/English blends regularly, maybe I just never noticed. Sorry you felt the need to let go a great smoking pipe. Hopefully your friend will enjoy the pipe as much as you did.

Do you happen to live in Middle Earth? I’m surprised you have a friend IRL that smokes a pipe. Sorry to hear about the Emerald cob.

A straight emerald cob was the only pipe I smoked for my first year or so of smoking a pipe. I ended up trashing it after excessive use.
