What's your best/favorite burning smelling blend?.. I love that hard burn that produces tremendous smoke when you you first light your pipe I wish I could get that through out the smoke.

I smoked cigars for a decade before getting into pipes. That being said i like the heavier blends for my palate. Try some English blends. Nightcap is a current favorite for me.

Welcome to the forum.
As you can see, there are no shortage of opinions when it comes to choosing a pipe tobaccco. I think the best suggestion is to try samplers from 4Noggins or another vendor who will offer samples.
Some of our members swear by aromatics, others abhore them. Some love English blends, many love VA and Va/pers.
There is no right and wrong. Try them all, and has been previously mentioned, don't throw anything away. Tastes definately do change.
Good luck and have fun

I guess a question that I have is what kind of cigars did you smoke. If you smoked Acid cigars or CAO Flavors then keep trying aromatic pipe tobacco until you find some that fit you. If you smoked darker more full bodies cigars like Maduros then I would try some English blends or some really prominent virginias. if you smoked lighter cigars then Id go with burly based blends or light virginias. just my two cents

Favorite smelling blend hands down has to be Captain Black White. Man nothing comes close to the smell of that tobac. Everyone from kids to my wife love the smell of that OTC.

I would recommend HPCS Trout Stream, you can find it on the pipesandcigars.com website. Not only will you like it, but those around you will like it to (that will make for an easier transition to the hobby!) I wish I had found this sooner, as it is my go-to aro blend now. Good Luck.

Then I wouldn't imagine you would like flavored pipe tobacco either. I would go to a local pipe shop if you have one nearby. They usually have samples that you can try. Or they will have bulk tobacco that will be cheaper then tins. They should give you some advice but just remember to ask for non-aromatics.

BR tobaccos are crap. I haven't smoked the CAO blends, but it seems that all cigar companies that do pipe tobacco do aromatics. Dunno why - maybe 'cause it's easier to just spray goop on the tobacco instead of hiring a real blender.
I've found CAO Eileen's Dream to be quite good.
As far as ebay sellers, can you define a price range you are comfy with?

As someone who has smoked cigars for 30 years, and the occasional pipe until recently inheriting a few pipes and fully immersing myself in pipe smoking, I have to say you really have to dispense with your cigar-like expectations when smoking a pipe, especially as regards enormous smoke volume. It's a different bag. When you want to smoke a cigar smoke a cigar, when you want to smoke a pipe you need to take your time, you need to sip not suck, you need to let the smoke linger in your mouth. You can still get plenty of satisfying smoke volume out of a pipe, but it's not the same kind of smoke volume you get from a cigar, especially not a 50 ring gauge cigar. Nor is it the same kind of draw. And of course how you pack the pipe, and the pipe's own draw has a huge impact on all of that. But if you try to turn a pipe into a cigar I think you'll wind up with a hot, harsh smoke, at least that was my experience in going from cigars to pipes.
As a cigar smoker I smoke various types of cigars -- nothing too mild, no Connecticut shade wrappers typically -- everything from a Cain Daytona and Cuban Punch, which have a big of a floral aromatic quality to them, to much stronger cigars like Cuban Partagas' and Cain F's or La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Chisel tips. Lately I've been loving the Flor De La Antillas robustos and bellicosos. I've been smoking a bunch of different pipe tobaccos and loving all sorts of different ones. For a cigar smoker looking for big smoke volume, a decent kick and a voluminous mouth feel with a taste that still says tobacco, I love Escudo -- smoking it right now and the smoke volume is big and the mouth feel is substantial. It's the only Va/Per I've smoked so farand I think the Perique pepperiness that I wouldn't like in a cigar is delicious, but it's not an every day smoke for me. I also have loved the Lat heavy English blends I've smoked -- McClelland Blue Mountain has been my favorite so far, though I think I'd like it with a hair more tangy Orientals in it (I've been mixing in a tiny pinch of Early Morning Pipe now and then). But I love smoky flavors -- I love lapsang souchong tea, I love barbecue. It also has a big, rich mouth feel, but the flavor is not cigar-like. Personally I adore the aroma, and my wife loves the smell in the tin, but I can't smoke in the house so I have no idea how it would go over in a room. But that's my favorite smelling tobacco so far. There are others I've tried that I like -- aromatics even (though nothing fruity) -- but from my cigar smoker's perspective both of those are fully satisfying, that is once I chose to smoke a pipe like it's a pipe and stopped expecting it to be a cigar.

For what it's worth, I (re)introduced a cigar-nut buddy to pipes, and his previous negative experience with them was a result of "one dimensional" blends. He tried Nightcap and before you could say "PAD" he'd snagged a Peterson off Ebay-it's now dedicated to Billy Budd. My advice would be to try the "fuller" VA/Pers, like Escudo, and some good Englishes. Dunhill Nightcap and 965 and GLP Westminster would all work fine.

I and many members of this forum would not recommend ebay for a second pipe unless you really know what you are looking for. There are some reputable ebay sellers like Great-estate-pipes, Smokershaven, pipestud, coopersark, and briarblues. But you can also find some good estate pipes for very reasonable at places like:
Smokers haven:

Briar Blues

pulver's briar

mkelaw

smoking pipes

james island piper
If you look around those places and find a pipe you like post a link and ask about it first. Also if you give us a price range and pipe style, i am sure there enough of us that like to research things that we would be happy to help you find a good deal on one.

+1 on Escudo. Picked up a tin at a local B&M (FYI, they're sold out on SP.com). I'm a brand spankin' new pipe smoker who still enjoys a cigar now and then, and I fell in love with Eacudo from the first smoke.
