Good Tobacco

Just started my pipesmoking but hhave been smoking premium cigars for about five years just want to know any suggestions for good smoking tobacco. I i have bought the Cao sampler and did not like IIhave also bbought riklum riff whiskey blend and was not to fond of that either.

Welcome! Sampler is a good way to go. Skip the aromatics and buy a sampler of Virinia tobaccos and a sampler of English blends. Pipes&Cigars.com or 4Noggins would be good places to start. Also, buy yourself some Carter Hall.

Welcome, yes the samplers are good and I second bobpnm's recomondation on Virginia's. My self being a former Cigar smoker (Torpedo shaped Maduros the best, they just concentrate flavor towers the end) I find the VA a better fit. Something about the Latakia I can't stand . A VA and Burley blend are my second fav.
If possible find a local B&M and try small amounts in a clay, meer or corn till you find what you like.

BR tobaccos are crap. I haven't smoked the CAO blends, but it seems that all cigar companies that do pipe tobacco do aromatics. Dunno why - maybe 'cause it's easier to just spray goop on the tobacco instead of hiring a real blender.
If you've got a good local B&M they can be very helpful, but those are hard to find. Bob's advice is good on samplers, but I wouldn't recommend the Carter Hall - it's really a mediocre burley. For something in a similar vein, MacBaren Burley London is much better.
Any place you can buy an ounce of a bulk is a good place to start - and skip aromatics. ::

Two things out of two-hundred.
1. Getting an understanding of the tobacco types, blends, and traits is crucial to your enjoyment. My enjoyment really opened up when I started trying Virginias, VaPers, Englishes, and Balkans. From those broad families I could start dialing in what I was looking for. If I found a VaPer I liked but didn't love I could start looking for one with characteristics that we're closer to what I wanted. http://luxurytobaccoreviews.com is a good place to start since you can search by ingredients.
2. Don't throw anything away. A year ago when I started smoking, I thought Englishes tasted like old shoes and pitched a few blends. Now a year later, I can start to pick them apart and follow the different threads of flavors. Who knows what enjoyment I'll get out of them as time progresses and my smoking skill and palate deepen.

Welcome to the site Mark. I was also a big cigar guy when I took up the pipe and the blend that opened my eyes to how great a pipe could be was Escudo as mentioned above. Here are a few of my other favorites. You should read up on flake tobacco and also the cube cut method for preparation. Also when smoking flakes, you want your pipes to be on the smaller side with a bowl width of no larger the 13/16. Dublins, Apples and Billiards are a few of my favorite shapes for flakes. Good luck in the journey.

Welcome to the forum! You have come to the right place if you are serious about learning how to enjoy this great hobby. If you are interested in Va flakes, I would recommend Samuel Gawith's Best Brown flake as your first.

Don't overlook McClelland Virginias. You can read all about them on this forum. Just put McClelland Virginia in the forum search engine and go to town.
They are some of the best VAs on the planet, if not the best.
If you would like to try great burley, Cornell & Diehl has some extraordinary burleys. And like Captain Bob says, C&D has a good deal on samplers. You can go to their website: http://www.cornellanddiehl.com/oldindex.html and find their burleys, flakes and Virginias listed once you get to those individual pages.

May I suggest McClelland's Dominican Glory? I've found it to be very similar to cigars.

Skip the aromatics and buy a sampler of Virinia tobaccos and a sampler of English blends.

Good advice.

However; most of those new to the Pipe Smoking experience, do so by indulging in Aromatics.

There are many fine Aromatics on the market.

One I would whole hearted recommend is 1Q.

It will be a huge departure from the cigar experience.

Another route; would be the Virginia/Per or VaPer route.

English blends are terrific; however, they take some getting used to, and your significant other may not be so appreciative.

A second recommendation that would actually include two different blends are are as follows: Rattray's Hal O' the Wynd, and Haddo's Delight. Both are first rate and delicious examples of the VaPer realm.
