Since Parliament will be disolved too soon, they won't be able to have a reading of the anti-smoking bill. Unfortunately, both Labour and the Conservatives claim they will reintroduce the bill. I suppose the best we can hope is that it gets quietly shelved down the line.

It was dystopian to see the state of things in Scotland. All the tobacco in black cabinets. I could not even enter the tobacco section of the Edinburgh duty-free until met by a clerk and escorted inside.

Vapes were everywhere. If people have thought cigarette butts are bad, they’ve got to love the plastic-encased e-waste of single use vapes in the gutters of every city street.

The treatment of smokers as damnable deviants is enough to settle the question of whether I could live in the UK. Sadly, an independent Scotland would probably be even more draconian.

That's our new normal in the UK. No tobacco products on display, uniform brownish-green packaging for cigarettes and RYO tobacco, furtively kept under the counter.

I went into a health food shop and then a pharmacy today with an unlit pipe in my mouth, stirring up no reaction at all - a young woman in her 20s told me last week that I was only the second person she had seen smoking a pipe, ever. So, they probably didn't even know what it was.

A lit pipe would have got me arrested, probably!

This made me curious. If it's not lit, why keep it in your mouth? Why not just put it in a pocket?
I had no pocket for it - and lit it once I had finished business and was on the street. I haven't quite cracked that "how to carry a full pipe with nowhere to carry it" thing.

(I'm a self-propelled wheelchair user, I hasten to add. I run out of hands real fast lol).

My cousin's daughter's boyfriend - don't know what that makes him to me - once was detained by the police because he was smoking a perfectly ordinary briar pipe. They thought it was a weed pipe, as tobacco pipes are an extremely rare sight - especially in the mouth of a 20-something-year old. After examining the pipe and tobacco to verify it actually was tobacco, they let him go.

JimInks had a similar experience, apparently, as a 16 year old!
