Found a tin of Gold Block dated January 2016 in a B&M recently so I thought why not try it. Marginal reviews had me a bit concerned but what the heck.

Opening the tin was amazing - rich, stewed figs and hay aroma, nicely moist but not wet, dark golden brown. Man, this could be nice!

We’ve got a biter folks! Blends like this should have a picture of Hannibal Lector on the tin.

The taste is pleasant if you’re okay with a stinging painful tongue. Not my first rodeo with VAs and I’m by no means unfamiliar with sipping gently on feisty blends but man, this one is pretty warm on the tongue.

I’m going to enjoy it for what it is (the flavor is nice!) but I wouldn’t buy this one again. Even if it’s aged. Crikey, if almost seven years can’t mellow it out I don’t want to fool around with it again.

When I was trying to figure out what type of smoker I was, I recall ordering a tin of this. If I remember correctly, my tongue was roasted for days afterwards. Come to think of it, I think I have that tin jarred up in my cellar, it's probably 14 or 15 years old now.

Out of curiosity, does MB VA No. 1 bite you? It stung me like a viper 20 years ago so much so that I threw it in a bin and forgot about it. I fished it out a couple of years ago and while I still feel a tingle, it doesn't hurt like glowing embers anymore.

I've not tried Gold Block but your description brings back memories.

Yup, it sure does. I’m fact, most MB blends with VA as a major component are pretty hot on my palate. Strangely, St Bruno is not although it’s produced by them I think (perhaps I’m wrong about that).

PS products don’t seem to be hot for me either. Many of the G&H shag cuts are definitely warmish on my palate but manageable.

Chemistry is a weird thing I guess. I’m sipping on the Gold Block very gently right now through a Vauen church warden with a 9mm filter and while it is manageable it’s still warmer than I’d like. I’m just determined to smoke this tin, dammit, lol.

I have never had a problem with Gold Block ripping my tongue out (and I have some from 2016) and have found it to be a meh tobacco for myself, and don't really care for it. With all that BS said, I would jar it, come back to it later, and see how it would work out, considering that you like the blend, and that's what is most important, What You Like.

actually i hope its smooth and i make funn of you guys :)
There’s actually a reasonable chance that it is smooth and it just doesn’t agree with my chemistry. The taste is nice but I just can’t love it d/t the excessive tingling and stinging and that might just be it and my palate not playing nicely together.
