There can be stupid questions but this isn't one of them. You are really asking two questions here. The bowl getting hot occurs commonly amongst people who think you have to puff on a pipe constantly and emit large amounts of smoke. It happens most often, but not always, to cigarette smokers. I am not a cigarette smoker but I do like to puff on my pipe. If the tobacco is hot you have a real problem because that is the stuff you are bringing into your mouth and it isn't going to be a pleasant experience. You absolutely must slow down the pace of your smoking.

I jest, but it is somewhat true. Amazing things happen when others think you are just a dumb line cook (and cooking well is a good way to impress the fairer sex as well).
