There are lots of great places just outside New Orleans that I always have more fun doing. I always think of inner New Orleans as a great place to walk and look at stuff (if there isn't a parade going on), but outside New Orleans is where you get huge piles of great food for cheap in cooler hole in the wall atmospheres. Also, a swamp boat tour of the Savage is worth it. I swam with alligators and got some great close up photographs a few years ago. Once you learn how they only eat once a month and they really aren't all that aggressive, they are more like big dogs. Also, there are lots of places to check out the tobacco fields. I'm always interested in how folks do their agriculture in other places.
Inside New Orleans, go to the Cigar Factory right away and buy as many stogies you can. It helps keep the stink down if you constantly keep one burning. Graveyard tours are great. Food inside the city, isn't what it used to be. Expect to pay way too much for way too little. It is a great place to check out architecture and enjoy a stroll along the river. Cigars, cigars, cigars... Everything is sticky and stanky, ha ha.
