Going to Germany ... What to Bring Back?

.........hello friends, i have family members going to Germany in a couple of weeks, and i was wondering what great German pipe products (tobacco, etc.) should i ask that they bring back ...

Does pipe tobacco every show up in duty free shops? If so, what shows up there? Germany seems to be

one pipe tobacco blending capital, if you could get it home duty free. All I've seen are scents and liquor,

cigarets, cigars, and watches.

I do not have the experience that these guys do. But Joura makes NICE pipes there and I would try to bring back pounds of Dan Tobacco.

I think one of the hidden jewels of the pipe world are Bertram Safferling pipes. Certainly Germany has several long-standing wonderful pipe makers, and his quality of workmanship is as good as any of them. And the wood that Safferling uses is reportedly from a cache of 100 year old briar, and that is why the smokers say his pipes smoke as cool and dry as any on the planet. Perhaps they can bring you one. Safferling does not make a lot of pipes each year, so, having one brought to you directly from Germany would be quite a coup.

I have never understood the old Teutons as they have always struck me as a taller subset of the Japanese. Very narrow thinkers with no sense of humor who produce opera that lasts for 18 hours which should be classified as a war crime or at a bare minimum a cruel and inhuman punishment. That end of Europe is all a bit odd and I am speaking as a man who is married to a Swedish speaking Finn which again is another sub-bracket of the teutonic race. The German's seem to have won WWIII and taken over Europe which we in the Brit community now call Greater Germany or the German Co-Prosperity Sphere without even firing a shot. Their weapon of choice is an army of men called Klaus from the European Central Bank that pitch up in your country and cause havoc by telling you how to run your economy while selling you a BMW.
That being said you might want to buy a box of Al Capone cigars. They are really good and they used to be about 1 DM a stick and were so big you had to cut them in half with a razor blade. The Germans do have some rather interesting pipe tobacco, although none of the ones I tried spring to mind immediately but they all seemed to be a bit cigar flavored if my memory served me correctly. I would be fascinated to see what you bring back and pictures of any tins. Enjoy your trip whoever is going!

Go to Pfeifen Huber in Munich. Awesome pipe shop. Very close to Marienplatz.

Another German tale, true tale, had a huge problem on starting up new Tower in Ethylene production. Exxon called on their World Wide Engineer, gave him the benefit of the doubt as he was a pipe smoker. Well after a couple of weeks, problem not solved, long weekends and a catfish fry on one of the weekends , he was offered a plate and turned his nose up and let us know Catfish was a nasty btm dweller. I had to follow him on unit and made a suggestion that was followed and that solved the problem. He then before he left offered me a World wide job working with him. I told him anyone that don't like catfish is ignorant and I don't work for ignorant people. If looks could have killed I would have been dead. :rofl:

German on my father's side of the family and yes, they are an emotionless and aloof bunch. I've been told I'm that way too and suppose I am to an extent.
