Punk had so many diverse influences and dispersed into so many subgenres, that what is or isn't punk per se always ends up being a Life of Brian "Sermon on the Mount" scene. Iggy, MC-5, Lou Reed and the NY Dolls weren't necessaritly punk but punk would have had a tough evolution without them. Some like Patti Smith were almost more performance art than punk. I grew up with Hardcore Punk like FEAR, GBH, The Exploited, Circle Jerks, X and Black Flag. The Germs, the Bags and Castration Squad begat 45 Grave, which I played Earlier and that band, along with the Misfits and TSOL, laid the groundwork for Goth, Death Rock and Horror Punk. By that time what was left of punk and metal had become so adulterated that it became hard to tell where one ended and the other began. What's Punk? I don't know. Punk is dead. It was a short-lived movement that gave birth to several great bands and a wholelot of miserable imitations and fashion disasters. I like it anyway.
