Congratulations on your cobs! The big one is a bit unwieldy, but I love mine. There is nothing quite like smoking one of those big boys. I started with 3, but now a couple dozen.
If you have a belt sander handy I'd recommend doing the "Retired General" mod on the MacArthur.
Pay no heed to the custom rustic finish on these two, but they sit quite nicely.
Do note once you cut off the bottom of the cob it will reveal some of the spongey core of the cob, not necessarily a big deal but if seeing a void on the bottom of your pipe bothers you it could be filled with Plaster of Paris, which is what Missouri Meerschaum uses to fill the outsides of their smooth finished pipes before polishing.
Quick question for you. I was getting ready to make an order from MM (I want another tobacco pouch and a couple of straight cobs) and was looking at the poker as a possible inclusion on that order but at only 4 1/2", it's short...I don't normally smoke out of nose warmers that much. In your personal opinion, is it too short? I know that's a subjective thing and all, but since you just got one and haven't really gotten used to it yet, I figured you would be a good person to ask.Yep, will do, the shank is glued in, but the metal band is not, which is a bit weird, so when I pulled the stem off the little band went flying, is this normal? I need to do something about that, any suggestions other than water?
I'm fine with how the stems look and feel - much prefer acrylic overall - but I would like them to be tighter like on my briars. Believe it or not it is cheaper to buy from MM directly and get them sent over the Atlantic Ocean than buy these in Athens, where in the best case scenario the US$ sign is replaced with a Euro sign, and in the worst case scenario in some shops the figure is then doubled
I got a crate full of my homegrown, need to process it but right now I'm looking after both my young kids so there's little time, will do in a week or so when my wife is back.
As for a first smoke, I had one in the Dagner and it was delightful. It was Motzek's Halo Twist, delivered as I know it, smooth and cool smoking, wide open drawn which I really like. I am already kicking myself for removing the Freehand from the cart before firing the order out... Of course getting it now would be stupid if it was to travel over the ocean solo so...
Ain't is silly, I'm sitting here with a big smile on my face all due to hollowed out ears of corn, essentially a kid with new toys!
While waiting for Karam's response, i would say that it short but not dainty or too small. Not as substantive as say, a Castello 10 which is short but stocky but larger and much chunkier than, for example, an Eltang poker
Thanks. I was more wondering whether it smoked too hot or not. The shortest pipe I currently have in my arsenal is just a hair under 5", but my favorite pipes are my canadians, so you can see where I usually am on length. That said, I don't mind going shorter than 5" but just don't want it to burn too hot that it feels like you are sucking in flame every time you draw (I'm exaggerating of course, but you know what I mean).
Not too hot. I only have one pipe wbich burns too hot, an Eltang pencil shank dublin which is lovely to look at and light as a feather but is really is unsmokeable because it becomes so hot. While these dagner/MM pipes are modest in many ways they do not burn too hot
Good to know, thanks. Over the years I've purchased dozens of various cobs and always noticed a slightly hotter burn simply because of the relatively large draught hole, but it was never too hot...good to know this one is about the same.
I'd call it dainty! It's a miniature poker in my hands, it's cute. Having said that, it smokes very nicely and does not get hotter than any other pipe I have. The chamber is adequate for a 30 min smoke, and it is really very light and easy to clench. Oh, to add - the smoke coming to the mouth is not hot, despite the shortish stem.
By the way, I did glue the metal bands this morning and now I am very happy with both pipes.

Thanks for the response! I've had to glue mine too on several cobs so I know what you mean. Unfortunately I've waited too long to get the poker as they appear to be all sold out
...must have just happened last night because as of yesterday afternoon they weren't! Oh well, they'll make more!
A tip for you MM cob fans: If you check Boswell Pipes site, they usually have one or two Country Gents with a custom (made by Boswell) stem. They're great stems, and it's nice to know from then on, you can simply replace your cob and switch in the Boswell stem (which will not require, or even accept, a filter). I know some folks talk about ordering 'forever stems' for their cobs, but I've been able to amass a few just by ordering off Boswell's. They're a night and day difference that really improves the cob, especially the ones that want a filter, which I find too airy.
Thanks for pointing those out. I have replaced a lot of mine’s stems with vulcanite stems that I turned to fit. I actually prefer that wide open draw, but I prefer a different stem material from the soft plastic. I’ll check those out! ?
