People are apathetic because they see that politicians commit perjury once elected. It's called "campaign promises." That's not what men died to defend. Adolf Hitler was elected. Bashar al-Assad was elected. An election isn't a guarantee that the people being elected are worthy of the office (or even qualified to be in a position to ship people off to die in a war) or that voting equals freedom and representation. Voting makes us feel we have a voice, but these people running are all lawyers that know how to manipulate others. And they do it admirably well. A real voice would be the ability to have a state election to fire a senator or congressperson who isn't following through on promises.
Voting, yeah, great. But most Americans---and the press---have totally abdicated their responsibility to ensure their own freedom. They think voting is the ne plus ultra of freedom. However, 55% will vote to take away the rights of the other 45% if there's a snazzy enough TV ad for it and they "feel" their kids will be safer or some damn thing. It happens every time and people voted for it or voted in the tyrants that then voted for it. This is freedom? Voting is exactly how we lose freedom because we vote for the tyrants that do it. Majority rules and if the majority likes being a slave, guess what? And they'll vote for a guy because of how he looks or because he has a celebrity-like personality cult that would make Stalin swell with pride. That's a choice? There's those that run saying what they'll do and they don't when elected. Then those who say what they won't do then do that once elected. That's called lying.
Yes, voting has an important role in a free society. But it isn't THE important role because even dictators get elected and repressive regimes like Iran have elections. Yes, Iran has elections. They just select who you get to vote for. Rather like we do. Go ahead, run for office, see if you get elected. You haven't got enough money to get elected. What guarantees freedom, or what used to, is the Constitution and Bill of Rights. No matter who gets elected or why, nothing is supposed to trump those documents. No one should ever have the right to vote to take away the freedoms in the Bill of Rights. The misuse of voting is what's self-evident these days. It isn't people voting or not voting that is the problem. It's the clowns, liars, and tyrants that are given to us as choices that is the problem. Sorry. Clean up who RUNS, the rest will take care of itself.

The right to vote is one of the most precious rights that we as citizens have. Both my parents were refugees from European opression, and they knew first-hand what happens when citizens lose the right to elect their government.

I was reading an article today about a woman who is 102 years old and just voted for the first time today. It is sad that we have an awesome freedom to vote to elect those who govern over us yet people take that for granted, or will not use that right that so many have sacrificed to ensure that we have that right.

Ugh. I don't know why certain types of people feel the need to disregard rules we have here. The "No Politics" rule is there for a reason, people. Brad started this thread as a reminder to exercise your right to vote here in the US. That's all it was. Why do people feel the need to expound their political opinions in a thread like this? Please. Expound elsewhere.
Brad, I'm sorry. This needs to be closed down.
