These are lies…

1. You can be anything you want to be.
-Your teachers lied to you.

2. It won’t bother you if you don’t bother it.
-Your mother lied to you. I’ve been stung by both bees and wasps, & not once was I ever bothering them. In fact, I was very much going out of my way to avoid bothering them.

3. There are no stupid questions.
-Well, I’m probably about to prove this wrong.

Yesterday, I noticed my my taste for usual fave English has just waned a bit. MM965. Still love it. Just need a break.

And this morning I woke up with a hankering for MacB’s Vanilla Cream.

But…

I still want to smoke my fave pipe.

On a scale of 1 to the St. Louis Cardinals, how stupid am I if I smoke that aro in my fave pipe that’s usually reserved for Englishes?

Oh, and Go Cubs.
as stupid as you where the day before that.
Oh and on the first one. God I've seen so many musical nimrods waste their lives thinking they could be a rock star.

The fact is, this was a disappointingly humble response, from you. I'd like to see a more oppositional attitude, moving forward.
I'm sure that we won't have to talk about this again. That will be all. I'm glad that we had this talk.
hehehehe, that was a good one. I do try and be helpful and usually just explain how I do things. I will try and post more towards your likes. Thanks for calling me out. lol

I never thought that "you can be anything you want" pitch was practical or honest. Most of my grammar school through high school was discovering what I didn't do so well, and a few things I could do well. So as long as "anything I wanted" was something where I showed a glimmer of promise, I was welcome to test my abilities further.

Like most youngsters, I visualized myself in various life roles, among them, a medical doctor, maybe a surgeon because of some dexterity, though I had limited mathematical skills and didn't venture into chemistry, choosing physics instead, and not doing too well with that. For a while, after serving as a church acolyte (candle lighter) and usher, I fancied the ministry, but realized my appetite for being in close contact with people all day long wasn't all that comfortable for me. I seriously thought about stand-up comedy, because I had an ability to tell a good story and get people to laugh, but realized I didn't want to spend 8 hours of the day trying to find everything funny, and so on.

It's hard work to find what you're good at, and it might be a good idea not to start out totally pie in the sky. What can you do, and how do you like to spend your time, and what careers involve those elements? Everyone shouldn't want to be president. Few people should want to be president.

At one point, my dad looked around at my various hobbies, among them shortwave radio, photography, and writing, and said I might want to focus more on just one of those. He was a wise fella, and I greatly valued his concern. But in the turn of time, I was a minesweeper radioman, used photography in various reporting and editing jobs, and spent the rest of my time writing and editing. So if you know what you're doing, you can be several things you want to be.

I always enjoyed science, but never even considered science as a career. I had some excellent science courses, but I didn't major in science. However I did spend decades working with scientists, so that's another odd turn.

I would never tell a kid she or he can be anything they want to be. I'd ask them what they enjoy doing, what interests them.

I would add to that: "Be who and what you want to be, not who/what you think I want you to be."

Well, didja do it?

One problem with living in the Internet Age is that we have more ready information than ever on the consequences of a mistake, and if you have any doubt at all, you can quickly become paralyzed by indecision. There's something to be said for just going ahead and doing the dumb thing anyway, and learning what you will from that... ;)

I am a writer. Not the best, but it is what I am. One thing I learned early on is I can make up anything I want. It doesn’t mean it’s true what I write, but the fact that I wrote it is true. Because of this, after 50 years of writing, I am often confused as to what is and isn’t actually a fact when it comes to me and my stories. I’ve learned to just roll with it and enjoy the emotional truth found in the story. I think that most people in some ways embrace this - it’s why one can say things that are often not quite accurate. It why a memoir is not factual. You can be anything you want is a statement to that effect. It doesn’t meant literally just that. But emotionally, you can take charge of your life and live in a manner that expresses your “truth”.

Do you agree?

I wonder if the OP is from St. Louis. He sounds like a native.
I’m from Central KY. Horse Capitol of the world. And I’m a lifelong Cubs fan. Family in Chicago and all that. Plus WGN growing up. I love an hour from Cincy. Cubs and Reds for me. So basically enormous amounts of pain with occasional elation.

Sorry fellas (and non-fellas, if there are any in these replies), life/work took over as it does too frequently, and here I am a week or so later just now getting back to this.

That day I ended up just reaching for the MM965 again. I was working. It was literally sitting on my desk. The MacB Vanilla was across the house (I work from home-ish). I didn’t consciously choose not to walk across the house to the kitchen and snag the other stuff. I’m lazy. But not THAT lazy. I don’t think. It was one of those things where I just habitually reached for the tin in front of me, and before I knew it was happily puffing away and doing work.

But… your replies have helped me in 2 crucial ways. You have confirmed to me that I both A) should not worry about it; and B) am a moron of the highest order (which is the best order of morons IMHO).

So my hankering went unfulfilled that day, sadly. And actually has ever since. This is most unacceptable. But I will soon be smoking my vanilla in my favorite pipe.

Was this “What’s the Most Moronic Thing You’ve Ever Done” thread ever started?

If not, I give it a full-throated endorsement. I can make it at any time.

I lost my taste for Latakia and Oriental blends over a decade ago and don't miss them one bit. I am fine with my Virginia, Virginia/Perique and my Virginia/Kentucky and Burley blends. Mine are all flakes or a few plugs and one rope. I get a cooler and slower smoke that is also more favorable than any other cut of tobacco.

the problem with that is the most moronic things most of us do are usually the things we don't think are moronic at all, well at least not till ten years later.

Alright, everybody, head over to the General Discussion section. I posted a thread for us all to share the most moronic things we’ve ever done. I expect we’re all in good company.
