I haven't given away many pipes..The ones that I did give away though were to people just getting into pipe smoking.I gave them pipes that I liked and I knew smoked well in hopes that they would become pipe smokers. So far none of them have.Recently a fellow that I had given a very nice pipe to told me that he never smokes it.He didn't offer to return the pipe and I would never ask for it back..Is it just me or do you hate to see a pipe that you once liked a lot not being used?

I wouldn't worry about it, Puffy, because you don't know what's in the pipe's future. Perhaps he will just keep it for a while as a reminder of your friendship. Perhaps one day down the road he'll give it a try out of curiosity. Or maybe he will give it to a nephew or cousin and it will find a welcome home that way. You just never know.
As long as he doesn't throw it away, it isn't wasted; it's just patiently waiting its turn.

A lot of wisdom in this. When you come across a $20 in an old pair of pants, or find an old photo album, or some memento from your past ... that's what that gift was. A treasure, even if they didn't realize it.

I'll admit, I figured someone pulled the plug on their smoking habit by the title.
I don't think I'd go giving away a pipe lightly, myself. Why waste good briar on someone who doesn't appreciate good tobacco?

Most of my given away pipes found homes with my sons and son in laws, some of whom use them, some not, but still we have a connection. If I am helping a new piper get started, I usually get a cob for him or her, to see if they get the hang of it before I give away briar.

In the two months I have been smoking I have given away three briars and about 10 ounces of tobacco. Of these three people one smokes about once a week with me only, another about once a month, and another gave up after two weeks. I try not to get upset when people don't like or don't get one of my favorite hobbies but it is hard. At least I can say I didn't loose much money. The pipes were only about 30 each, and the Tobacco was easily replaced at my local B&M. Keep trying and you will eventually find yourself another passionate smoker!

Puffy, perhaps next time say something along the lines of"If it's not something you want to do or something you won't do, let me know. My feelings won't be hurt. If after you try it and find yourself not using it, please give the pipe back so I can pass it along to someone else."

I gave my nephew a flawless name-brand pipe of 1950's vintage. I called it an heirloom, as I barely broke-it-in from new myself. I included substantial tobacco, tamper, lighter, etc. He smoked it the one time; said it was great. I'd hoped it would steer him off cigs or at least occasionally sub from them. Weeks later while at his house, I found it in his back yard lying in a pool of rain. I never said anything about it. It's likely still there, as he never bummed more tobacco. Not a great loss, but I do wish I hadn't seen that.

I have given away some very nice pipes over the years to non-pipe smoker's that were interested. I've given away lots of tobacco, too. My conclusion is if they do not have an investment it is a waste of time. Also, if they are ciggarette smoker's and they do make an investment, it is probably still a waste of time. I won't do it anymore!
