I have been wondering this for a very long time and have not seen it as a thread on this forum since I joined 2 years ago. Keeping in mind that aromatic and English tobacco pipe smokers tend to segregate, which of the two general tobacco categories produces the most stubborn ghost? I tend towards mild aros so an English ghost is more tenacious to get rid of but I keep hearing members complain that the aros are a pain for English smokers. What gives?

Well, for me there is nothing worse than enjoying a toasty English blend, then suddenly getting some sort of floral overtone in the mix. Ecccch! It doesn't happen often because I clean my estate really well.

More than once I've had meticulously clean estates arrive and after working through a bowl of a favorite Lat blend I start getting hints of what was once smoked previous. It's typically near the very bottom of the bowl and after several rotations, the ghosts are gone for good unless I ream the cake back then it's square one again. Some are no big deal but I once had a Dunhill estate that I got at a surprisingly good price (early in my estate buying days) and whoever had it must have burned pounds of Errandale through it and it would have made a better bubble pipe than a smoking one.

If you salt and alcohol an estate, or use a retort, most ghosting can be eliminatated. Holy water and an exorcist are needed for lakeland hauntings, however.
