If you are trying to keep your pipes pure, I would assume thorough cleaning would be just as, if not more important than dedicating. I don’t mind ghosts, except when i do mind them. you’ll have to figure this one out the hard fun way.

I do have a dedicated Latakia pipe, but that has more to do with the infrequency in which I smoke it, the openness of the draw and the shortness of the shank - I find I get more of the aromatic flavours by French inhaling straight from the chamber, more like trying to enjoy the room note than smoke the blend. Others dedicate pipes to straight Virginias in order to not interfere with any subtle nuances.

I used to smoke everything out of all my pipes. It wasn't until last year that I started dedicating pipes. I have 2 VA pipes, one latakia piper and one "kitchen sink" pipe. I can definitely notice a difference in the Va department. I'd also add that smoking everything in all my pipes never stopped me from enjoying anything. Definitely a personal preference

I'm Trying to keep most of my pipes pure.
If you're trying to keep your pipes "pure" DO NOT smoke them.
There is no such thing as "almost a virgin". ;)

If you're trying to avoid ghosting from affecting subsequent smokes, then you need several pipes - at least one for each genre

Some are not bothered by ghosts. Some smoke predominantly 1 or 2 blends. I like mixing up my smokes - I have English/Balkan pipes, Virginia/Vaper pipes and aromatic pipes.

I would definitely keep a separate pipe for anything with latakia in it. I also keep one exclusively for burley (I find it tends to take on quite a bit of the flavour of the previous incumbent for at least 4 bowls or so).

Hmm I always assumed the first thought is, if your pockets are deep enough to afford many pipes to dedicate, then go for it.

If not, and something ghosts a pipe after one smoke, I’ve always been under the assumption, that smoking some straight burely, and others have suggested an English, usually gets the Ghost out after a few bowls.

I’ve done both with success, straight burely, or pretty forward burely blends and English.

I can’t afford to dedicate, so if a Blend ghosts, I only smoke it once, then the other blends as mentioned until cleaned out, and it’s not failed me.

You don't have to spend a lot to get a few good pipes.

Lots of love for cobs amongst the members here. I have never tried a cob, so I can't/won't comment.

I have quite a few estate briars that cost less than $30. As do quite a few members. My cheaper pipes smoke as well as their more expensive stablemates.

If you're not into estate pipes, you can find new pipes (French briars) on EBay for $20-30 each.

This hobby of ours is as cheap or as expensive as you want to make it. Cost does not need to be a factor in determining your enjoyment.
