It is amazing what a simple plea to the gods will do for a smoke. I, like Greg, loved latakia blends and hated everything else. The gods got their revenge when I turned 60 or so and had a sudden love for VaPers. I could tolerate latakia but greatly preferred the VaPer blends. I had tried them before, but they were lame besides latakia blends. So, I am forced by fate to tolerate all smokers because you can never tell what the future will bring.

Interesting what he said about latakia. Marty Pulvers, venerable pipe vendor for decades, said that if it were not for latakia he likely would never have smoked a pipe. He starts each day with latakia. Woof, what a man.

I love the skill that Greg writes with but I just can’t get behind this friendly ghost thing. Nope. No can do. Something’s gotta go. Either the ghost or the pipe. Looking forward to the next article. I love reading them.

I’ve always been under the impression, that with a deep clean, possibly also sanding the chamber clean, and then only smoking burley, and latakia occasionally, with some patience and time, you can get rid of stubborn ghosts? hmm 🤔

Nice article, thanks!

A couple of my cobs are "anything & everything" pipes, and it's kind of nice getting a bit of latakia ghost peeking into a vanilla aromatic. For me, I find a good strong english will overpower most ghosts.

I tend to dedicate pipes to certain genres of tobacco, sometimes flipping around between Virginias and burleys in the same pipe. As long as I enjoyed the tobacco in the first place, any ghosting from past bowls is largely a pleasant experience. The only real problem is with aromatics which I gave up on long ago. They are just not for me. I nearly ruined a pipe once with some Strauss Sleepy Hollow. It took quite a few bowls of Vincent Manil La Volute to exercise that ghost. Lesson learned.

I recently bought an estate pipe that I really liked -- nice design, good draw, .....but.....it had a ghost that would not leave. I tried every technique ever mentioned on this forum, everything short of napalm, and it still had a Lakeland ghost. Had to get rid of it. I believe I whined about it somewhere on this forum. I have no interest in experimenting with smoking past ghosts ; I'm a very patient person, but not that patient.
