When I first started, I had tongue bite BAD. I would have to take a few days off to recover. Now that I use 9mm filters, I have not experienced it again. I believe most of that is due to the filter. Some may be more experience. Either way, I hope the filter will help. Vauen‘s are great pipes.

I’ve never experienced tongue bite but I have scorched the roof of my mouth drawing hard on a pipe too tightly packed. Steam or flame did that and I never did that again.

I am convinced that what people describe as “tongue bite” is chemical—either a reaction to an additive or personal response to a balance of PH or Acidity.

I say this because I’d recently found an old pouch of Half n Half and I decided to smoke a bowl. When I did it stung my mouth. A few more puffs and that was that. —if this is what others call “bite” I feel badly for them. Because it would ruin pipesmoking for me. Oh and so much for “dry your tobacco” — believe me, it was dry.

Further convincing me of tongue bite’s chemical nature are the many who say that Granger “bites” them. Of all the blends I’ve ever enjoyed, Granger is as mild as a kitten.

Not that heat isn’t a culprit. People smoke hot and burn their tongue. I just believe folks are talking about two separate things and calling “both” — tongue bite.
That’s pretty much the conclusion I came to in my other thread about Alcohol & tongue bite.

I really hope I can find “a way” because I’ve invested a lot in this over the years.

if it’s just my personal body chemistry then shit. What can I do?

At least if it was heat bite I could learn to smoke properly.

Anyway, I’m filtered up (both the ones in the stem and the ones you put in the bowl), have a variety of tobies on the way and a couple of new pipes …. so … wish me luck.

I was once told to switch to the Peterson P Lip to avoid tongue bite. I switched, and found out they were right
Just last week I purchased a Savinelli Dry system with a P-lip and the combination of characteristics of that pipe immediately made it a "magic" pipe - best I've ever used.

And that P-lip has the oversized button which is good for clenching / dangling, but I soon figured out that the prominent aspect closer to the tip allowed me to "push" it as well. Meaning that I can place it with pressure between my upper & lower teeth and that directs the smoke much more to the "center" of my oral cavity and keeps the heat down on all tissues, tongue included.

I'm pondering going to only these aspects in pipes from now forward. Very intrigued by having a stable of "great" pipes instead of "good" pipes.
