Brown Flake is a nice tobacco. I really would like to know the answer to your question, too. Somewehre, I have read, that it does not contain Kentucky, but instead Virginia, which is processed and cured the same way as Kentucky. Other sources state, that it contains classic Kentucky...

But let's see what the experts have to say.

I think it has definitely an unusual taste and especially an unusual tin note, which may lead to some rather bad reviews.

I was under the impression (from reading tobaccoreviews.com) that it was a pure Virginia that is pressed and fermented in its own juices.
Whatever it is I love the stuff (just ordered another pouch).
BTW I just looked on tobaccoreviews and it has a 3.2 rating from 78 reviews which I consider a very decent number. You have to actually read the reviews as well because the number doesn't tell the whole story. There's 5 or 6 people on tobaccoreviews whose opinions I give much more weight to and the ones of them that reviewed Brown Flake gave it 4/4, I agree with them.

I don't believe it contains any Kentucky leaf. I think it does contain air-cured strong African Va leaf, which may hit similar notes for some. I pick up a cigar-ish note that is a bit like semois but not as deep or nutty. It's probably the most leathery of any Va I've tasted. Not "new leather" or old grimey catcher's mitt leather, but more like an old leather belt. The nicotine content can remind you of an old belt too... as it'll whoop your ass if you disrespect it!

I get cigar notes as well, to me it has a deep, dirty earthy taste which I love. I find it quite unique and none of the other straight Virginia blends I've tasted are anything like it.
I ordered a pouch of Brown Flake yesterday as I'd run out, it's one I like to constantly in my rotation.
I just hope it arrives before things like the post office start shutting down or running on a reduced service.
Not only has this order got my Brown Flake in it but also pipe cleaners (which I'm dangerously low on) and a sample of Grousemoor Plug which I'm looking forward to trying.
The thing in the order that is more important than all of them combined however is a tin of Ennerdale Flake because I've also ran out of that.
The Ennerdale is going to he my main weapon in fighting this terrible disease as I strongly believe the moment the coronavirus gets a whiff of that delectable flake it will realise it is out of its depth and go bother someone else.

It's sooo good! The top flavor is the same lemon cookie/ green tea/ grassy sugar cane as the mixture, but the tobacco is much more fermented and rich! I wish it were available here.
Also, +1 on the medicinal effects of Ennerdale! Grasmere is another effective room sanitizing and sanctifying smoke?!

Germain's Brown Flake is the bee's knees. Absolutely delicious and as fine an exemple of the British art of tobacco processing as any. However, Germain's Medium Flake is a sauced-up abomination of processed tobacco, if it even deserves that moniker. Do not buy it. Thank you for reading this post.

I like Brown Flake but feel similar to @cigrmaster in that I wouldn't chase it.. Germain's sauced up abominations, on the other hand, are amongst my favorite tobaccos! I'm gonna have to look into this Medium Flake you speak of...

I mean, I love St Ives and ASTB, and they are pretty loaded with Germain's fruit topping.. does Medium Flake's topping compare? You wanna trade the rest of your tin??
I was trying to be funny. I really like Medium Flake, which has some kind of citrus topping, and am indifferent to Brown Flake. I've only 1/2 tin of Medium left and gotta find a shipping buddy in the UK to get me some more. I didn't know St Ives and ASTB are fruit topped and will now to have try them. Thanks!

Oh yeah. ASTB is a medium Balkan, maybe Margate, with a fruity topping, St Ives is a light English, maybe St Charles mixture with some Cavendish added and the same fruit topping. I've read the topping might be apple brandy, but it tastes like fruit stripe gum to me. I've wondered if they made a blend with that top flavor but no latakia for a hot minute.

@smudgersmissingleg Did you get some pipe cleaners? If needed, I can pop some in the post to you.
