GBD is a pipe manufacturer that is sadly no longer in business. You can find GBD estate pipes on ebay and the like, but you'll be hard pressed to find one new in a B&M store. Hope this helps.

The company was founded in Paris France in the 19th century by Ganeval, Boundier and Donninger who were no longer associated with the company by the turn of the century. By the time they left the GBD name was well established and thus retained.

In 1903 an additional factory was built in England and ran by Oppenheimer. The Paris factory moved to Saint-Claude in 1952. Since 1981 the majority of GBD pipes come from the English factory. At about that same time GBD merged with Comoys, since then all production for both GBD and Comoy comes from a single factory.

Paylesspipes.com still has a variety of GBD's in stock, but IMO they're asking top dollar prices.

I nevertheless did some business with them and was very satisfied.

I gravitated toward GBD's because their stems feel really comfortable in my mouth, and a large

percentage of their stock have a ¾" tobacco chamber, which works best for me.

You might keep an eye out for the following pipe brands, which are GBD seconds:

  • Beau Nash

    City de Luxe

    Country Club

    Digby

    Irwin's

    Penthouse

    Samuel Pepys

    Theydon

    Town Club
ps. Here's a link to a GBD group 3 Bent Apple shape with a clear stem on sale for

$122.50, which, LOL, is about where the price ought to be in the first place.

I have 2 GBD's. An unsmoked 'New Era' 9447 (such a wonderful grain that I am loathed to smoke it) and this one I got a couple of weeks ago, which has been smoked but no more than a couple of times. It's a GBD 'City De Luxe' with a hand cut stem. A really big bowl too (40mm deep and 25mm inside diameter)

They have a awesome draw as the stem bore is large on most of them . If one gets away from the Billards and Bulldogs larger bowls can be found .

NIce and there are still a lot of them out there as estate pipes. On bigger chambered pipes just let the cake get a little thicker and they smoke very well. I am smoking a pot right now as I type and it smokes like a dream.

I didn't realize that GBDs weren't being made any more. My first pipe was a GBD. Still smokes quite well and is still one of my favorites.

Actually, they are back in business, well a Cadogan owned company is now using the name. Pipe & Cigars sells new GBD's, they are in the $80 ballpark and similar to the new line of Comoys. Personally, I'd rather find an older (brass rondell) estate, a better pipe for less money.
