ive got some tins of sam gawith flakes last few months. Issue is, why does the flavor simply dissappear after the tin has been opened and left on a shelf for a week or two?

In ye olden days, I could take a tin of chocolate flake, open it on the first, smoke a flake, leaf it on the shelf for a month and it would be like i just broke the vacuum on it.

The mythical navy flake, well the mac baren virginia flake i bought has more of a smell and taste.

Not my experience with SG flakes. In fact, I am not sure there is another more consistent flavor than the Flake flavor of their Virginias, where in FVF, St.James, Navy, Bothey, etc...

They all have that sweet flavor regardless of the other components or toppings.

I will say I find it so prominent they can be a little one note. However, they also open up maybe more than any other blends over a long, slow smoke... They def require patience.

I smoked some FVF that was in a tin I left open for over a year.
Was still nice and moist. It was very good smoke.

it was moist, and it was sticky like a factory fresh tin of old gowrie when i rubbed it out today.

However, the chocolate flake tasted like the navy flake that also happened to taste like a weaker version of mac baren virginia flake.

quite saddening as I had very fond memories of chocolate flake from the old days.

Recipe changes in 2018.
Whu changes.. you mean they totally shitted on the flavor juice of goodliness?

The bad things like that should be written. Screw the California nanny state warning. I want "flavor changed to shit" on the tin lid in neon yellow.

Chocolate ain't bad as a. Unflavored Virginia Burley flake, but I couldn't taste latakia. Had jocks mixture early in dif pipe.

Now jocks is a mild blend that is approved by the flavor gods.

Don’t like it, don’t buy it.
More for those that like their stuff…

I think it's the tins. They've changed and are made with the assumption you're going to smoke that tin in a few days to week. I could be wrong but I've heard a few people who recommend jarring their blends even if you plan to smoke them right away. I don't have a ton of experience with their blends but I've jarred their flakes and had the flavor last for many a months. It could totally be something else but their tins are not intended for the kind of pipe smokers that join forums, they're intended for the guy that buys a tin and only buys a new tin after he's smoked the last tin and nothing else during that time.
At least it's better then when they put english style snuff in german style tap boxes. (English snuffs use water for hydration and German snuff uses oils). They'd dry out lose flavor and with snuff that doesn't work great. If you buy their snuffs the tubs work great and their snuffs are great if you buy the tap box you'll find out why older snuffers called them sneezeboxes.

I jarred 6 ounces of Bob's Chocolate in 2017, just before I stopped piping for 7 years. Sinse Spring 2024 I have smoked about 4 ounces of it. It still tastes the same to me. I never really got a strong chocolate flavor, aside from the the cocoa notes I get from the Burley. I've been told the chocolate is more of a very dark chocolate versus a milk chocolate flavor. Maybe that's why I dont taste much, im looking for Hersheys or Cadburys (for you Europeans). Im not looking for the bitter baking chocolate like I once stole from my mom's pantry.....it was awful. :(

i dont care what side interests this rachel has.

You dont cut the damned flavor to one of the most unique products left. Hell, if the current management doesnt like doing things the correct way, they should let the german company that makes their snuff, just take over the rest of it as well.
