Last winter i bought a cob and just was not happy with it at all. It had a horrible taste to it that i just couldnt get used to. Like when you eat corn on the cob you get to the cob and suck out the juice lol.
I was sitting here and just all the sudden got to thinking about getting another cob. I live a half mile from a local tobacco store. Just the regular tobacco store nothing fancy. So i just jumped up and went and got a 2 dollar cob and a pack of Prince Albert. I must say boy im glad i did lol. It seems to be just a fun smoke, no gimmicks no taking care of a briar just buy a few of these and throw in the tackle bag type of pipe.
Thoroughly enjoying this smoke.
Scott
Just curious do you have to let a cob rest like you do a briar?

I let all my pipes rest after I smoke them, though I doubt that's necessary.
The only taste I ever get form a cob is when they are brand new. I can taste the wood as the stem starts to burn away at the bottom of the bowl.

Well... my first cob i smoked daily for months. Just make sure ya let it cool abit between bowls. Mine now has that MO Meer look to it and i just puff on it one day a week all day long its kinda cool watching the out side turn colours.

Oh yeah, it's good to give em' a break as you would a briar.

But then again, what pawpaw said, let em' cool off and go again. All my cobs are MM's as well, very common for me to smoke several bowls with one during the course of a day.

Yep, let it rest especially if you are smoking an aromatic tobacco. I had a cob once, the only pipe I had at the time, that I smoked so much, it swelled up and busted from the moisture it absorbed. I guess it was my fault for smoking it too much. I do have another cob that I enjoy but, I let it rest for a while between smokes. Just my experience, others may tell ya different.

Most of the time I let my pipes rest at least 1 day, but there are some days, I'll smoke 3 bowls in one pipe. Sometimes that pipe is a cob.

I gave away my first cob, but it was an excellent smoker. It always smoked cool for me, and i was sure to show my appreciation by abusing it! When i first got my cob it was a daily smoker for a few months. Im glad you gave it a try again and you enjoyed it. I never rested mine much at all, several bowls a day. It held up well for me, though i can't say for all cobs of course. I think if you just keep the cake from building up too much it should be good.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the cob! I smoke one of my several cobs almost every morning with coffee. It just so happens I typically choose PA as my first smoke too!

I agree with Phillip, the only time I've ever tasted anything off, or foul from a cob is the wood of the stem burning away on a new pipe, after 5 or 6 smokes, it goes away.

Love those cobs, have a half-dozen in rotation with the briars: 2-Custom/MM General

Hackerts, 2-Country gents w/custom lucite stems, 2-eggs with custom lucite stems...all fantastic smokers no matter

what type blend is in them

I've started to love my cob. Usually smoke it at least once a day if not a bit more. As for resting, it rests about as much as any of my other pipes, which is anywhere from 12 hours to a couple of days, as I usually just grab whichever pipe I feel like smoking at the time without regard to how long they have rested and have had no problems so far.

Just curious as to how long a cob pipe will last? I know it depends on how often its smoked but have read that you smoke them till their done and throw them away, does that mean they only last a month or so?

I find there is a very subtle caramel corn taste in a brand new cob. It goes well with straight Virgina flake. That disappears very quickly. You will taste the beech wood (I think) stem when you burn off the very top of it. That also goes quickly. Like people, you never really know how long they will last but good care can squeeze years out of them according to some experienced cob smokers.
I smoke the hell out of mine, almost every day for five months and I expect it will last a while yet.
There are some very cheap and very shitty cobs that are made in China that have some problems due to the cobs and the rough and ready manufacturing process. I don't expect them to last very long and there is no telling what the cobs have been treated with.
Missouri Meerschaum is THE best.

Actually, a corncob can be smoked again, once it's been cleaned and cools down. I try not to smoke the same cob more than three times in a row, but I'm a very slow and very dry smoker. For complete care information, check out my Primer, and also my Buyers Guide. Of course I have roughly 75 cobs, so I only smoke a cob again if I use the same blend, such as Carter Hall.
