It's garden time in my neck of the woods, I don't think I see a thread about gardening. Let's make one.

What're y'all growing?
First year with the new garden, and I've got like twenty total square feet of miscellaneous beds that I don't know what to do with.

This year we have:

Sweet, chili and Serrano peppers

Normal and cherry size tomatoes

Cucumbers

Normal zucchini and round zucchini

Potatoes and onions

Radish, peppermint, dill, oregano, parsley, basil and anise

Couple different types of Virginia tobacco

We also just bought 2 tea plants to see how those do in a few years.

Some of these are all new to us but everything except the tea plants was done from seed which was also a new success for us.

I did see that tea would probably maybe grow in central Maryland, and I considered trying. Then I was put off by the price of seeds.
Maybe next year.

So far I've got corn and samsun in the ground. Gonna turn the corn into a three sisters patch, once the corn's gotten a few inches.
I hear dill summons wasps that prey on horn worms, so I should probably start some of that to protect the tobacco.

There’s a place out in Oregon that sells tea saplings. I think they are 1-2 year old. That’s what we did.

Slugs will be an issue for my tobacco I expect like they were last year. I did have success with wrapping copper tape around their pots, though I think results vary with that.

Slugs love beer, put jar covers full of beer and they drown gratefully.

I bought a few bags of that compost from Maine that uses discarded lobster and crab shell. Man, this stuff is luxurious! Growing up my Grandfather swore by mushroom soil but I don't see it around much...

A short list of what I'm growing this year:

Hopi corn
a bunch yard beans
cowpeas
favas
rapini
ground cherries
amaranth
Persian melons
crap load of herbs
3 types of okra

Just got in from watering, pleased to report my corn and amaranth have sprouted.

Keep running into inconvenience with the tobacco - Not enough Samsun pre-grown to get 'em all transplanted and spaced right, so I just sowed the last of my seeds direct into the soil and set my bigger specimens in grow bags. Where some varmint has been nibbling on 'em.



I've got one growing indoors that's flowering at the moment, so if nothing else I'll have more seed in a week or three. All is not yet lost!

What sort of amaranth are you growing? I sowed one to eat as callaloo and two for visual purposes. Forget their names at the moment.

Red Garnet, mostly because it's pretty. And maybe I'll try to make food out of some of it, since I'd imagine most varieties are equally edible

No veggies planted this year but I bought a bunch of assorted flower seed packs at the $tree bc they were 4/$1. I’ve got about a dozen pots of flowers growing around the pool. I go out and see what’s starting to bloom everyday when I get home from work. It’s been pretty cheap entertainment

I'm pretty sure my grandpa used to grow those. Can do all sorts of stuff with 'em. Admire the flowers, which are unique in the plant kingdom for their musical prowess. Fry 'em, bake 'em. Weird-Blue-Seed-Plant has all sorts of uses.

Seriously though, I've got my standard perennials out; marigolds, posies, and some wild flowers. My roses and irises have been really showing off.

Yes copper tape is the best way to get slugs of plants. I wrapp the tape also around plastic pots the bottom cut off with a knife like a collar and put it partly into the ground with the copper on the upper rim to protect plants, it works.

I sowed some Puntarella, Carosello Tondo di Manduria and Sclupit today.

New ones to me, but puntarella and sculpit (after looking them up) sound really nice to me. I enjoy arugula A LOT and it seems similar category.
