Shoot, I watched all 100 hours of the extras in my LOTR boxed set and never saw this. Now I guess I'll have to make myself a walking stick that will hold a churchwarden, too.

Just to add one more layer of geekiness to the conversation. In the first chapter of The Hobbit Gandalf's pipe is described as a short clay. It's on page 13 of my copy. So the "Gandalf" pipe in my collection is a short clay pipe. Incidentally it was previously owned by my Irish great grandmother, who I'm pretty sure was rather formidable in battle herself.
