Mr. Pease sent over his January submission, and this is in part what I emailed back to him..."I just kept shaking my head the entire time reading this, thinking to myself, "Yep, yep, Mmm hmm." This is exactly my experience too. Great photos. I'm drooling over that State Express." (The pipe pictured is the exact one he is talking about in the article.)

Give it a Rest

Well-made pipes at nearly any price level will accept hard usage much better than we generally assume, it is true. My father was a one-pipe-at-a-time guy; he owned only one at a time and smoked Granger from the foil pouch until they burnt out, smoking all day and at work. Since I have a lot of pipes from pipe acquisition disorder, I tend to give them all lengthy rests, but I know from direct observation, it is not mandatory. When I travel, two or three pipes suffice. Thank you, G.L., for pointing this out.

I smoke VaPers pirmarily and those are smoked in pipes that are reserved for VaPers. Same thing for English smokes. I have exactly one other pipe which it the aromatic. Anyway at the start of a given time I will pull out four pipes and away I go. I tend at a high level to smoke two bowls a day but it does go up to three now and again. So I'm going through two bowls a day with four pipes. I've followed this strategy for some years.
Really loved the article!!

I think that Greg may be on to something. I'll smoke the same pipe more than once during the day, but then I give it a rest for a week or so. After coming back to Virginias in earnest last year after many years of just the occasional bowl I'm going to give his theory a test.

I love this guy's tobaccos and now his writing. I wonder if you clean after each Latakia smoke with alcohol you could smoke more often. I have been keeping up a 7 day rotation for my "good" pipes and smoke my "cheaper" pipes (cob, Rossi) more often. Is it really necessary to wait 7 days?

It's entirely believable to me that VAs can be smoked nearly back to back without souring a pipe, whereas latakia will lead a pipe south if that pipe isn't given significant rest.

What I'd like to understand, though -- just out of personal curiosity -- is what exactly a pipe's "rest" consists in? I mean on a material (or "scientific") level.

Temperature and moisture are obvious dynamics. But, once a pipe has cooled and dried, what else is there for it to do?

Put another way:
What is the difference between a latakia pipe that was cool and dry an hour ago, and a latakia pipe that was cool and dry a month ago?

Hypothesize, men -- inquiring minds want to know!

I usually pick out for the day either a Meer or briar & a cob. Rarely do I smoke continuously for days the same pipe. However, every once in a while I’ll puff on a cob for a week straight until I tire from it and want something else. Rest is definitely good advice and the pornography was appreciated. ?☕
