Lately I have been revisiting some old friends. This is one that I plan to keep in touch with. When I opened the baggie I got a whiff that made me smile. It took me a bit to figure out exactly what the aroma made me think of. It was horses, in a very good way. A nice earthy slightly fermented smell. Looking at the tobacco all you can say is it's black. It is a fairly fine almost shag cut. Fresh out of the bag it is just a wee bit damp and a bit of air helps to get things dried out for an easy light. The charring light produces a lovely earthy flavor that develops even more after the final light . Very cool smoking and extremely mellow! I wouldn't say that it is complex. More like just comfortable. If you are sensitive to vitamin N you may want to either try this one in small bowls or wait until you feel like you are ready for the stronger stuff. Used with respect and after a nice meal though you should have no trouble. Some say that there is a burnt meat taste to this tobacco. I can't detect it if there is. So I recommend you stuff a nice clay full. Sit back. Relax and enjoy!

Burnt meat and road tar. Thats what I get from the tin note.

For those who feel really adventuresome, try it on an empty stomach and with an adult beverage of about 86 proof. I did that one afternoon before dinner. I couldn't find my backside with my hands in my hip pockets. :?

I haven't tried the sliced version, but I have the rope in my rotation. For me it's definitely an evening smoke, very relaxing.

I was talked into trying Sliced Black Twist by a friend whose tastes I usually share; I assumed I'd hate it: now it's one of my favourites. It's pretty strong, and it takes a bit of getting used to; but it's a wonderful, substantial smoke once you've got the taste for it. I don't know if anyone else will see what I mean by this, but it's a first-rate "winter" smoke, just right for out-of-doors on a cold day. In the same way, I wouldn't want to smoke it on a hot summer afternoon. G & H's brown twists are IMO best avoided; they're very very strong and rather harsh; but the black twists (you can also buy it unsliced if you like all the fuss of preparation) are much smoother and kinder. I'd recommend everyone to have a shot at this. Even if you don't like it, you'll know you've had a smoke! Take it slowly and start with a small bowl: it can smack you hard if you don't approach with caution.
