Is there a difference between FVF in the tin and that which comes in the 250g box? Like is the tinned version actually smokeable even after a full day of drying?

They’re the same. Bulk comes in cool 6” flakes. Dry the crap out of either before smoking, lol.
Yup if anything the bulk may be a tad drier since it’s in a plastic bag. But same product. I buy the boxes because it’s so much cheaper.
250g in tin price = $70
250g in box price = $40
a 250g box fits in one tall ball jar.
it all depends if you really think you need it in tins. Like if you’re going to quit someday and sell it all off or decide to trade it etc, you’ll always do better with sealed tins. If you’re simply storing it for yourself to smoke I go with the most cost effective method.
I've recently been using a coffee grinder on bulk FVF I jarred in the mid 2000s. The tobacco is drier after sitting in the jar for 13-15 years but it is just so tough to rub out.

It leaves a better "cut" than rubbing it out. There is plenty of "shake", to go back to my College days, but not as bad as I thought. Enough to cover the top of the bowls for easy lighting.

Like St.James flake, the taste is quite good but after the first quarter of the bowl it gets hard to keep lit. Actually St. James is even harder to smoke than FVF. I feel like there's some sort of weird casing on them that keeps them from drying out properly. I don't think its PG though, not sure what it is.
They dry fine for me. Are you rubbing out the flake fully and drying until crisp?
I have not had a problem drying out FVF regardless of whether tin or box. They appear to be identical except the flakes are cut smaller and neater for the tin. I buy the boxes and couldn't be happier. I have to agree with Brobs that it comes notably drier in the box
Yes I rub out fully and dry for 24 hours or more. Maybe its just the particular boxes I have or the high humidity climate I live in,but both my FVF and St James seem to never really get "crispy", even after a day or two. They seem to dry to a sort of hard rubber type consistency which makes it seem like they're cased with something unnatural.
Probably the humidity of your environment. They dry fast here whether summer or winter. Super dry over the winter and central air running in summer.
Dry it to the point you think it should burn, load pipe and put pipe back on stand to smoke the next day. This works for me with SG. They all seem to be fire resistant. For ropes I cur a 1.5" plug and put it in my designated rope pipe which has a wide enough bowl to allow for expansion. In this case I leave the pipe on the stand for 5 days to a week. Tongue bite is a real threat with SG if not dried enough. Golden Glow is a perfect example. I still for the life of me can't get that shit to burn short of mounting a lighter to the pipe.

If it's anything like the Squadron Leader tins vs box, there is a difference. Both are amazing but the flavor profiles differ slightly. My guess is it's the same as SL and whether it will catch fire or not depends on whether SG has stopped putting asbestos in their flakes. Jokes of course but it's always been hard for me to light fresh SG flakes. They need a bit of time out to become flammable.
The boxes are not not air tight. After a while, they'll taste different from stuff in a sealed tin that was packed at the same time. Simple.

Bulk isn't sealed, so you lose some aroma/flavor. Most of the time, since these sell quickly, it doesn't matter all that much.
I don't buy things like ennerdale or 1792 in bulk anymore though.
