I was wondering how the bulk version of this flake compares to the tinned one.
Thanks!

I prefer the bulk. First off, I save 10-20 dollars off a pound. Also, try both arrive wet, and need to dry. The tins are sealed and, IMO, you are SOL on drying them until you smoke t. The bulk, to me, already dries a bit during shipment, so I usually keep a pound in the ziplock and box for me to grab from over a month of two. It slowly dries out and is great.
Taste wise, they are identical to me. The only benefit to either one, would be if you are cellaring or smoking.

Thanks for your input. I need to buy bulk because I'm crazy about this blend!

The bulk is also cut differently. While the last tin I cracked had uneven and fairly stiff flakes of varying thicknesses, the bulk was a very thin and even cut. The flakes are also long and skinny, so you have to be creative if you're going to fold and stuff. That being said, I can't find the bulk anywhere, if you find it, let me know.

My bulk right now is uneven as all get out. Ice smoked the thin stuff because it was perfect moisture and now, a month later, the thick stuff is dried to my smoking pint.

I got some at Piedmont Tobacconist in Oakland (SF). Maybe I should have gotten more... :puffpipe:

I have found no difference in the taste between the tinned and bulk versions. I have also seen thin flakes in bulk, thick flakes in bulk but luckily no shake at all. I buy the bulk because of the savings price wise, plus tins are a bitch to find.

If you are saying the Sam Gawith's Full Virginia flake is available in bulk I would like to find out your source since I have only seen it in the tin.

I notice no difference in the taste but physiologically seeing beautiful 6” flakes compared to those little sardines in the tin…
You also have to consider price and ageing. With more oxygen available by jarring creates a better environment for bacterial effects on tobacco. Keep those jars on their sides you’ll have a bigger smile years from now.

sale, most of our sponsors have it on a fairly regular basis, you just have to check them a lot is all. smokingpipes allows you to sign up for an in stock notification when they get it. Also is you call the smaller mom and pop retailers in the low tax states it can be had pretty frequently.

So I finally tried it.
It did not seem so moist so I just did the cube cut and let is sit on the table while I was making/having dinner. I loaded a straight bulldog with it and seat for the ride. This was love on first sight. I will compare it to Dunhill Flake (which is/was my favorite virginia flake so far). Slightly more full flavor, slightly higher vitamin N. I still feel is lower in N than uni flake for example. Very tasty stuff, almost nutty, leathery at some point, it burnt like perfect all the way to the bottom of the bowl.
This is real good stuff. Definitely a must try if you like va flakes.
I think I ll load a second bowl.
Cheers,
D :puffy:

I always buy my FVF in bulk. Online if possible, but I have no problem finding and buying it locally at my B & M. It just costs more.
