When Frog Morton Cellar came out, it soon became my go to tobacco. I preferred it over the rest of the FM series and at the time, the only thing I liked better was Penzance. Shortly thereafter, I took a two year break from the pipe and when I came back McCelland was no more. I really kicked myself for not stocking up when it was in production.

I have posted this before, but these days for a Latakia blend I like a blend of 1/3 Boswell's Northwoods with 2/3 Country Squire's Angry Cornishman. It does not taste like FMC (or any of the FM series), but for some reason it strikes some of the same notes for me. YMMV

Not clones for sure, but I would check out Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding Barrel Aged (or regular), The Country Squire Shepherd's Pie or Hunting Creek, Watch City Ahab's Comfort, Sutliff Count Pulaski or Burma Road, HU Fayyum and Fayyum Kake, Boswell's Northwoods, Cornell and Diehl Black Frigate, and Esoterica Pembroke and Penzance. Germain's English blends are also quite good, particularly Special Latakia Flake, but you have to be both diligent and lucky to land any of them for a reasonable price.

Man it’s still hard to believe some people haven’t had mcclellend. Kind of like when you start realizing young people don’t get you jokes or comments as they don’t have the common point of reference. Man I must be getting old in the pipe hobby! I was more annoyed when Murray’s shut down, when condor went to Poland, and when the two Gawith’s merged again (FVF hasn’t been the same). Things change to fast these days. I haven’t looked for a fmc match, as there isn’t one. But other full and creamy smokes there are a few goodies - lancers, proper English, heck ever father Dempsey might scratch that itch for you.

Watch City Nor’ Easter has a nice full and round mouthfeel and is a middle strength English that might scratch the itch. It has the additional plus of being readily available. Give that a try.

Get some charred oak cubes, soak in some spirits and put together with some Nor’ Easter in a mason jar for a DIY FMC.

I liked McClelland Virginias. Frog Morton Series? Not so much. I always took it as a starter tobacco. It was mild, no bite and smoked easy. I thought there were many English blends that were better. But I also recognize there is individual tastes. I share many sentiments that McClelland is no more. It is what it is. There are countless other excellent blends out there. I think one would be well served by spending their money testing those other blends than paying a super premium for McClelland Blends.

Agree w/ Hoosier, I smoked a few FM blends, sweet and mild mostly. But this idea that they are some kind of benchmark is just.... weird to me. Mix black cavendish and latakia. Highly processed, sticky (and never drying out, the original Frog was... suspicious), and cloyingly sweet. No, there isn't anything identical on the market, but there's many blends which to my tastes are far superior. Far rather have a bowl of Presbyterian.

That's more or less what I think/thought of FMC after I tried other Latakia blends. I think it was a starter english for many, myself included. My biggest beef with the blend was the smoke was thin and boozy, and I prefer my latakia blends with Orientals . I really have been enjoying it more lately than I had in years, though. Maybe it's the age of the tin or I appreciate the stoved VAs in it more than I used to. I'm sure the scarcity and knowing I'm smoking my final bowls of it also contributes.

I wouldn't pay a premium for it, though. I bet the Plum Pudding is better just because it contains Or leaf and has a bit more going on.

I've never had frog Morton celler, but I do give two thumbs up for sunset harbor flake for creamy mouthfeel, and voluptuous plumes of smoke (yes I said that). It's a CD blend that I rarely see mentioned, though I can't grasp why.
I agree. SHF is a supremely underrated blend. Super creamy and zesty. I'm surprised it doesn't have a cult following yet. I've got 12 tins aging. I'll probably end up buying more in the future too. More tins for you and me then!

Pembroke is very close but not super easy to get hold of. Of course it's Cognac instead of whiskey but super enjoyable and really close IMO.

+2 for Country Squire's Sheppards Pie.

at least Pembroke, while not super easy to get hold of, is one of the more readily available Esotericas.

I agree with the fellow King above who recommend Sunset harbor flake. Not necessarily a replacement, but unbelievably smoke-able and delicious in it's own right. I love Izmir! Also if you haven't tried Pembroke by Esoterica, I personally think it rivals FMC and the legendary Gawith Hoggarth Balkan Mixture is the best thing you will ever puff imho.
