Most always tamper. Finger in a pinch but I normally always have a tamper handy. I don't feel I can ever get the edge of the bowl where the tobacco meets the wood properly. With my finger I just get a depression in the middle. I'd rather have the ash higher in the middle rather than a depression. A flat angled tamper works best for this.

I use a tamper. I’m picky about my tampers, I like a round tamper, concave if possible. I like to pull the bits from the edges and leave a dome in the middle. I’m a clean precise tamper I guess, haha. I need a tool to get it the way I want it. The foot of a Czech tool is not what I look for in a tamper. I can take or leave the holes but if I had it my way they would be there. 💨💨

You asked the question.
"Discuss" implies sharing of information, which in my world hopefully implies that someone might learn something new.
And I learned a lot from this thread, thanks to everyone who replied.

That's what the little groove on the inseam of your pants are for - running the nail along it to clean out pipe tobacco ash from under your nail... certainly your pants have those? Are you wearing deficient pants? :)
Good so I'm not the only one then? Lol
