Friday Discussion: Tamper or Finger?

Both. I prefer Czech tool. But like last night, I just used my finger. It works great as you get older and you don't feel much.

I was using the wood handle from a carving tView attachment 352598ool (basically a wood dowel) . Then ordered a cheap E-bay pipe & the seller included a new tamper . Pretty handy :

Usually a tamper but on the rare occasion I’ll risk my hand modeling career and use a fingy

Half and half, if I know where my tamper is I'll use it but I often pocket it and then get so into smoking the pipe that I forget which pocket its in and as the pipe is going out I'll go oh shi- and just use my finger. But I'm a bass player who does a lot of hand sanding for work so I wont really burn anything imporant, just another layer to the callus lol.

The finger works, but its just so damn messy. What's in the bowl ends up on the finger, inside the nail, then wiped on the khakis etc.

I switch off between fingers and the Czech tool. Fingers are unmatched (IMO) when you want to check whether your pipe has actually gone out or just needs a light tamp, but the Czech tool is better at moving unburnt tobacco from the periphery of the chamber toward the center.

That's what the little groove on the inseam of your pants are for - running the nail along it to clean out pipe tobacco ash from under your nail... certainly your pants have those? Are you wearing deficient pants?

I always use a tamper. Never used my finger in over a decade of smoking... too risky.
