Walnut oil (natural, NOT with stain added) seems like the best bet, next to good old nose grease. It's pretty stable, doesn't seem to turn rancid, and imparts a nice sheen without clogging the grain.
Isn't there a problem with any form of wax affecting the "breathing" characteristics of a pipe?

FWIW, I've read from many sources that jojoba oil is the closest thing you can get to human skin oil. I didn't buy it specifically for my pipes--I had some laying around and gave it a whirl with good results. It is basically odorless and works well.
