In case anyone thought Lawrence's post was just a joke:
Pepsi uses aborted fetal cells in soft drinks

(@romanza: I hope you didn't normally drink Pepsi with those nuggets)

@dervis: No you're not the barbarian at all...growing up like that was civilized. The barbarians are those who run the chambers of horrors and torture we now call corporate factory farms.

the fetus cells are not actually in the pepsi they use some recepter to test tast. beats me how this is done.

the aborted fetal tissue used to make Pepsi's flavor chemicals does not end up in the final product sold to customers, according to reports -- it is used, instead, to evaluate how actual human taste receptors respond to these chemical flavorings.

@jaysin: Yes, strictly speaking, that is supposedly correct...and I would agree that their headline should have been worded more carefully. But 2 points to consider are these:
1) the aborted fetal cells are still USED in the production of the flavoring.
2) I can only speak for myself, but I simply do not trust these corporate entities any longer to tell us the truth about anything...and I'm not willing to take their word for it that none of these "substances" actually end up in the final product. And, even if that is the case, I personally find it disgusting, revolting, offensive, and completely unnecessary that they use such things AT ALL in the production of their "product". And at the very least, I think many people would like to know about this before they make the choice to purchase such products.
Really though, this is all part of a much larger picture that has to do with the entire food industry...the majority of processed foods are either unhealthy or unsafe any more imo. There is the whole issue regarding genetic modification as well, which is a whole other subject.

"Food Inc" is an interesting take on the industry, you can watch it free online at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQVo8gZdd0Q
It is also on Netflix instant.
The movie is narrated by Eric Scholosser, who wrote "Fast Food Nation" an excellent peek into the quick service industry. When I used to interview prospective managers, if they had no experience, I'd tell them to read this book and than make sure they still wanted to work in the industry (my company mostly avoids some of the poor labor practices described in the book, but still no walk in the park at times).

Scholosser comments 10 years after the book was released on the status of the industry, not much, if anything has improved:
