Sometimes, when I've been gone for an extended period of time, I return to my main home, open up the pipe cabinet and rummage through a few humidors only to realize that I've forgotten what I had stored in it. Sometimes, the smell of the tobacco is enough to remind me - other times, I am clueless. Nevertheless, I load up a pipe and fire up the bowl. Sometimes I am surprised but still clueless, other times, I recognize the blend after a few puffs.

Does this ever happen to you.

On a bigger note, a huge shout out to to @LotusEater - a generous gift of kindness - I can't wait to try these blends, all of which are clearly marked and clearly thoughtfully chosen - I won't be forgetting this. One thing never forgotten is kindness and the generosity of friends. Cheers to all who gather together in such manner.

I'll occasionally find a tin or jar in the back of the closet that I've forgotten about.
It actually happened yesterday.
I found a jar of MacBaren Plumcake that I haven't seen for 6-7 years. I smoked a bowl last night and it was fantastic.

What's not fun is finding an old tin that you'd opened a year or two prior and forgotten about and when you find it, it's bone dry. I've got about 2/3 of a tin of Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky re-hydrating right now that I found.

While I keep very careful track of what I have in sealed tins and “cellared” Mason jars, my collection of jars of “open” tins is well over 80 blends with no records kept. I have them loosely organized in 3 drawers: Virginia-forward (straight Va, VaPers, VaOrs, etc), burley, and aromatic. I routinely forget about blends and then stumble over them months or years later. The best rediscovery was a tin of Mac Baren Virginia Flake that I had neglected for 7 years.

Just the other day I saw a jar with C&D Redburn in it that I haven’t touched in at least 4 years. I might have to dip into it soon.

Absolutely, always forgetting what I have squirrelled away in a tote and more so in my mylar stash because it's all silver, no catchy labels to draw your attention. I guess now my cellar is in storage it will be a revelation when I retrieve it and start to unpack it.

Only a couple of jars without labels and I know what the tobacco is instantly, everything else in makers bags, tins, packets or labelled jars. I did find my last MB HH Latakia Flake the other day, along with a forgotten 60 Marlboro menthols from 5 or 6 years ago. And an Upmann Tubos, as a bonus.

On a similar note, I’ll intentionally tuck away a few random tins out of sight so that I will one day rediscover them. I sort of treat my cellar like building a future B&M for myself with how the future of everything might go. My favourite blends being the focus, but a few random others silently aging in the background to interest me when I’m looking for something different. It’s like gifting myself down the road.

Ah, I just figured out what the dried out tobacco in my humidor is... Ennerdale Flake. It took a second smoke, but there it is. Now smoking it in a Three Star second generation Lee Apple with a large bowl. I have three Comoy of London humidors - the older collectible types - and when I place tobacco in them, I can forget way too easily given the number of open jars that may be lying around and that I am focused on instead. Listening to the Counting Crows... A Long December... You remember that one?

Now if they hadn’t changed the sauce, we wouldn’t have this thread
