Interesting that folks are mentioning SOTE and Old Ironsides in the same breath as Penzance. I find the first two to be Lat bombs whereas Penzance tastes much more balanced to me.

Just took up the pipe again, after a number of years away. Gaslight is one of the first tins I purchased online, so I will be able to do a head-to-head comparison with Penzance fairly soon - I was surfing my bookmarked pipe and tobacco web sites, and one of them had the 8 ounce bags of Penzance in stock....briefly, so I got my first Penzance since 2004 today. Incidentally, I know it was 2004 when I last purchased Penzance because I found a storage container I had completely forgotten about. Among the 50 or 60 tins I found were 3 tins of Penzance, with the sticker I placed on them in 2004. 3 different samples of tobacco to compare ;)

I do not personally find Gaslight to be as similar to Penzance as Quiet Nights, which seems a bit sweeter than Penzance. I would say Lancer's Slices also hits some similar notes. Others say Brebbia Latakia Flake is a good alternative, but I have not personally tasted it (I do have a tin aging). Gaslight is really interesting stuff and well worth trying.

Yo thedu and tho
Brebbia Lat Flake No.9 is/was based on Syrian Lat,and is lighter and more floral than Pz, G/L, LS and QN, and for that matter, the new STP/STC Bengal Slices reintroduction.

Gaslight is the bomb-diggity. Still my number one favorite, and it blows Penzance out of the water. As for something comparable to Penzance, I tell everyone to take the "Pepsi-challenge" with Penzance and Pease's - Quiet Nights.
Really no need to try to find the Penzance unicorn, when so many other great blends are in stock and available.

For what's it worth, my 0.002 cents.

IMHO I rather like Penzance and I've tried a lot of the others that are mentioned here. They're good, but they're not Penzance. I think Penzance is everything they claim it is.

I liked Penzance as well, but it is not the be all end all holy grail you'll die a miserable, unfullfilled life if you never smoke it blend. Yes it is good as are many other blends that are similar.

Hey Dave,

I agree. I enjoy a lot of blends, and really dig Gaslight as well as Penzance.

Come on down, we'll smoke a bowl in my man-garage and maybe sip a finger of Glenfiddich.

P.S. Just scored two Brighams from Burlington On Whyte. Great folks and 20% off each pipe.

A few years ago, (OK, maybe 15 or 20 years ago - at my age, that is a few years), no one knew what an IPA was. Now there are probably hundreds to select from. There are so many excellent IPA's available today, that I couldn't begin to tell you which one I like the most, much less which one is "best".
Similarly, there are so many Latakia blends, I can't honestly say which I like the most. I can say, however, I love to be able to choose between, just off the top of my head, Gaslight, Quiet Nights, Owls Head, Magnum Opus, El Nino, and yes, Penzance.
If Estoterica stopped blending Penzance tomorrow, I would pause to pay my respects, then open a tin of Quiet Nights or one of a dozen other blends, then move on with my life.

+1 brass, so many I enjoy now, including Penzance and so many I've yet to try. Ten to Midnight came to my attention in one of these posts and it's now one of my favorites . Gaslight, Sextant, Black Frigate, Pirate Kake there are too many of these wonderful blends to obsess of one IMHO.

I've tins of 10 to Midnight and Larry's Blend on the way. The background story to the creation of Larry's Blend is quite interesting.
Russ Oulette tells the story and it is similar to that posted on tobaccoreviews.com.
Larry Loerzel, one of our regular store customers, and connoisseur of English/Balkan blends had tried Ten to Midnight, and although he liked it, he was looking for something a little fuller and different. Based on his preference, we blended a full, traditional Balkan using Orientals that were more buttery and amped-up the Latakia. This blend is now a big hit among our full-bodied English fans; a cool-smoking, very rich mixture.
I'm smoking Penzance as I type. It is delightful. But so was the bowl of Quiet Nights I had before that, and the bowl of Owls' Head I had on the way home. I suspect 10 to Midnight and Larry's Blend will suit me as well.
Honestly, I haven't smoked a premium blend that I didn't like. Some, like Lakelands and Pirate Kake and Brown Rope were so in your face that it took a few bowls to appreciate them, but given time, I even learned to like these brash blends.

Back in the day I drank a lot of EPA,

absolutely loved this stuff:

Have yet to find anything that captures the same profile as Whitbread did.

+1 on the Quiet Nights. Just finished a bowl and it truly is an amazing smoke. I haven't tried the Ten to Midnight yet but will put it on my list. Penzance, Quiet nights, Gaslight all have a place in my rotation and they all suit my palette in different ways. I'm trying to think of a few words to describe to me, the difference between Penzance and Quiet Nights. Quiet Nights is more vibrant, more flavorful?? Just my thoughts. I love the nicotine hit it delivers.
