My cellar isn't as wide as most here, maybe 40 or so blends. I'm only cellared deep on about 5. I could probably go down to one in each genre if I had to, but I would want something from each.
At last count I had almost 60 blends open.
Well, I didn’t *think* that was the case. I thought I was asking different questions and making different observations.Isn’t this just variant rehash of many rehashes of Desert Island Tobacco from less than 1 month ago?
I didn’t know there was a plug version available. I thought it was all flakeIsn’t this just variant rehash of many rehashes of Desert Island Tobacco from less than 1 month ago?
BTW - my choice was SG St. James Plug (alternatively SG Cob [1792] Plug)
ps - I missed out on the recent drop. This old pensioner would appreciate acquiring either or both from a kindly member(s).
Something about the simplicity of Peterson/Dunhill flake , kinda Goldie lox , could see myself settling with it forever , I already go through more tins of that than anything elseI have blends that I smoke fairly frequently. The main reason for my approach is so that I can develop a narrow but deep cellar of tobacco that I know I enjoy. The challenge is that from time to time, I will try a new blend and suddenly I desire to start cellaring another tobacco. In the last few months I have come to realize that I need to start laying away some HH Pure Virginia and in the last few weeks Peterson/Dunhill flake and the last few days it is 4th Generation 2012.
Look it hasn't changed that much. Even back then people said you needed multiple pipes for dedicating to different styles. And there are plenty of people even here that have a favorite or only blend. It's like talking about how people used to always eat the same thing day in and day out. Some people like the old reliable and some people thrive on variety.I recently re-inventoried my tobacco cellar after selling off some of it (600+ tins) several years ago. And I found that I currently have over 70 different blends represented. These are all blends that I’ve smoked and enjoyed in the past.
And it got me thinking about all of those threads about “What famous pipe smokers smoked.” And the answer usually comes down to one blend…maybe two. ”Einstein smoked *this*.” “C.S. Lewis smoked *this*.” You don’t get a list of a dozen favorites, let alone 70! The pipesmokers of the past apparently settled in with a chosen blend, much like a cigarette smoker who picks their one brand and smokes nothing else.
I’d struggle with that. I love the variety we have with pipe smoking today. I love being able to go from English to Virginias, flakes to fine-cut. Besides, with so many blends becoming increasingly hard to find (assuming they’re continuing to be produced at all), being dedicated to a single blend seems a bit risky.
So I’m curious: Are there any experienced pipesmokers here who limit their smoking to only one or two constant companions?
Or this: If you were told you could only smoke a single blend from now on, do you know what blend you’d choose? Would you be happy with this arrangement…or would you consider giving up the pipe altogether?
I enjoy the act of smoking too much to see myself giving up the pipe even if I were limited to one blend. But I have no idea what blend I’d choose if I had to make that choice; the only one that has come close to being a “lifetime” companion for me is Penzance…so where does that get me?
