Give me a relatively untamed and unadulterated burley and I’ll be happy from here on out.

As much as I love the on-line tobacco options, I think Lewis and other pipe smokers of the golden age had a huge range of choice, with all the tobacconists, the otc blends (many of which are no longer available today). And to think of the oriental options!

Interesting. I probably have around 30 different blends, but most days I only smoke two particular blends, one in the morning with coffee and the other for day smokes. But, I try to smoke a bowl of something else in the evening a few times a week. Probably because I feel a bit guilty having so many blends that I don't smoke often lol.

I like to switch it up sometimes, a virginia, a burley base, rarely but sometimes something with Latakia. Having said that, if I was only able to smoke one blend, I'd be happy and content to do so. Hopefully that blend would be Old Gowrie if it ever came to that.

I smoke one blend 97% of the time. (Poplar camp) It has changed over the years though. I had no idea how many there were until maybe 8 years ago. I tried what was at the store till I found a good one, and smoked the pipes that cvs or Walgreens had on the shelves. Mostly Prince Albert or half and half in Dr Grabow pipes for maybe 15 years.

I do enjoy trying new things now, and have a cellar full of tins and jars. I smoke those in my down time at home mostly. And my pipe choices have expanded and improved in quality. Otherwise, pipe smoking is just that: smoking. With a pipe lol.

Isn’t this just variant rehash of many rehashes of Desert Island Tobacco from less than 1 month ago?

BTW - my choice was SG St. James Plug (alternatively SG Cob [1792] Plug)

ps - I missed out on the recent drop. This old pensioner would appreciate acquiring either or both from a kindly member(s).

I didn’t know there was a plug version available. I thought it was all flake

I have blends that I smoke fairly frequently. The main reason for my approach is so that I can develop a narrow but deep cellar of tobacco that I know I enjoy. The challenge is that from time to time, I will try a new blend and suddenly I desire to start cellaring another tobacco. In the last few months I have come to realize that I need to start laying away some HH Pure Virginia and in the last few weeks Peterson/Dunhill flake and the last few days it is 4th Generation 2012.

In my very short time (relatively) of pipe smoking I've had a lot of blends of which I thought "I could be smoking this for as long as I smoke and be content", try the next and think the same of it. Even when I smoked cigs for 6 or 7 years I switched brands, blends, filtered/unfiltered, RYO by the pack I bought. Strangest thing is; I don't crave for variety in a cigar, if I could only smoke broadleaf cigars for the rest of my life I'm fine with it. I just like the variety, I smoke a pipe mostly in the morning and sometimes I crave something stronger/bolder than what others regularly smoke in the morning.

On this forum or other tobacco forums we are only a small percentage of the smoking population. I think being on a forum sparks the interest of trying other things in regards of pipes and tobacco, where a large amount of smokers will just smoke one pipe and one tobacco and be fine with it.

Something about the simplicity of Peterson/Dunhill flake , kinda Goldie lox , could see myself settling with it forever , I already go through more tins of that than anything else

I recently re-inventoried my tobacco cellar after selling off some of it (600+ tins) several years ago. And I found that I currently have over 70 different blends represented. These are all blends that I’ve smoked and enjoyed in the past.

And it got me thinking about all of those threads about “What famous pipe smokers smoked.” And the answer usually comes down to one blend…maybe two. ”Einstein smoked *this*.” “C.S. Lewis smoked *this*.” You don’t get a list of a dozen favorites, let alone 70! The pipesmokers of the past apparently settled in with a chosen blend, much like a cigarette smoker who picks their one brand and smokes nothing else.

I’d struggle with that. I love the variety we have with pipe smoking today. I love being able to go from English to Virginias, flakes to fine-cut. Besides, with so many blends becoming increasingly hard to find (assuming they’re continuing to be produced at all), being dedicated to a single blend seems a bit risky.

So I’m curious: Are there any experienced pipesmokers here who limit their smoking to only one or two constant companions?

Or this: If you were told you could only smoke a single blend from now on, do you know what blend you’d choose? Would you be happy with this arrangement…or would you consider giving up the pipe altogether?

I enjoy the act of smoking too much to see myself giving up the pipe even if I were limited to one blend. But I have no idea what blend I’d choose if I had to make that choice; the only one that has come close to being a “lifetime” companion for me is Penzance…so where does that get me?
Look it hasn't changed that much. Even back then people said you needed multiple pipes for dedicating to different styles. And there are plenty of people even here that have a favorite or only blend. It's like talking about how people used to always eat the same thing day in and day out. Some people like the old reliable and some people thrive on variety.
And as far as famous person smokes this or that. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that there was some type of endorsement deal thing going on. And the thing is just because they say they smoke this or that blend doesn't mean they don't have others too.
Though I also imagine that location played a larger role too. When you live in a small town with one pipe shop you are more likely to have one or two blends. For example if the only brand I could get are the non dunhill Petersons I'd probably smoke mostly University Flake. I'd smoke the others but that would be my main one.

Einstein and Lewis didn't have easy access to 100 blends. Probably didn't even know that many existed.

As for me, yes I could make do with one blend if I had to, I sometimes think about this and if would make things easier for me. It'd probably be a Lakeland.
