I recently re-inventoried my tobacco cellar after selling off some of it (600+ tins) several years ago. And I found that I currently have over 70 different blends represented. These are all blends that I’ve smoked and enjoyed in the past.

And it got me thinking about all of those threads about “What famous pipe smokers smoked.” And the answer usually comes down to one blend…maybe two. ”Einstein smoked *this*.” “C.S. Lewis smoked *this*.” You don’t get a list of a dozen favorites, let alone 70! The pipesmokers of the past apparently settled in with a chosen blend, much like a cigarette smoker who picks their one brand and smokes nothing else.

I’d struggle with that. I love the variety we have with pipe smoking today. I love being able to go from English to Virginias, flakes to fine-cut. Besides, with so many blends becoming increasingly hard to find (assuming they’re continuing to be produced at all), being dedicated to a single blend seems a bit risky.

So I’m curious: Are there any experienced pipesmokers here who limit their smoking to only one or two constant companions?

Or this: If you were told you could only smoke a single blend from now on, do you know what blend you’d choose? Would you be happy with this arrangement…or would you consider giving up the pipe altogether?

I enjoy the act of smoking too much to see myself giving up the pipe even if I were limited to one blend. But I have no idea what blend I’d choose if I had to make that choice; the only one that has come close to being a “lifetime” companion for me is Penzance…so where does that get me?

I used to smoke only one blend for many years. Now I'm expanding my horizons. However i would have no problems going back to only one blend. I would actually prefer it. I've been looking for a similar blend to smoke other than my Carter hall. When I find it, I'll stock up.

Being tied to one blend isn’t something I think most of us want to do. I have several blends that I rotate through so I don’t think I could settle just on one.

If you don’t mind elaborating… What is it about having a single blend that you prefer? The reliability of knowing what your smoke will be? Not having to concentrate on what you’re smoking all the time? Just curious…

I think the single blend thing was more common in the old days. People didn't have internet retail stores. Many smokers bought their pipe tobacco at the grocery or drug store and choices were limited. I think you'd be surprised, though, how many smokers still smoke a donor blend today. You need to remember, this forum isn't representative of the overall pipe smoking population.

I wouldn't be satisfied if I only could smoke one blend. But I'd make due rather than quit. Right now, my choice for one would probably be MB HH Pure Virginia or F&T CVP. Thankfully, I don't have to make that choice. I will say I could easily be satisfied with less blend variety than I have. I've traded quite a bit too consolidate my variety down and would do more if I could easily do so.

I think most people like Lewis and Einstein were probably to focused on things like the theory of relativity, splitting the atom, and writing the some of the most popular literature of a century to really give to much thought to pipe tobacco blends. Thier priorities lay elsewhere. Once upon a time not that long ago, most pipe smokers smoked one blend the majority of the time, pipe smoking was not a hobby, It was just smoking.

Aw hell, they probably smoked 10 different blends...1, 80% of the time and the other 9, 20% of the time, just no one paid THAT close attention to it...and when asked what they smoked, they simply gave their favorite.

Mostly kidding, but in all honestly, I would be MORE curious if you were to take Einstein, Tolkien, etc., put them in 2022 and show them the available websites, would they stick with their favorites, or would they branch out as well?

Don’t kid yourself: Tolkien would have one eye on his latest manuscript and the other on his phone, waiting for the SmokingPipes stock alert for Germain blends.

IRC's Three Star Blue is always near at hand. I would be extremely satisfied smoking only that day after day. If fact I have, often. I do vary blends now and then. IRC's Balkan Supreme being an all day smoke very often.

IRC’s Three Star Blue….. wonderful in all ways. I agree with Warren that it could/would be a very satisfactory choice for an “only one” pipe tobacco choice.

I could get down to about 6 or 7 and be pretty content. I've pretty much stopped buying new blends and have been making some trades when they pop up to trade out things less in favor for more stock of the handful I enjoy. The goal is to eventually whittle down mostly to my favorites with a couple random tins laying around for the occasional change up.

That reminds me of how Napoleon acted when Bill and Ted tried to pull him away from Waterloo Water Park in San Dimas....or the expression on Mozart's face when the sales guy showed him the electric piano....I'd think it would be the same way.

Hey Albert, how are you doing?

I'm far too new to the pipe tobacco world to make any definitive statements, but based on my other enjoyments in life, I prefer variety. I've been drinking beer for over 40 years and I definitely wouldn't want to drink the same beer every day. I have my favorites, but there are a lot of them, and I'm always looking to try something new. I would guess I'll probably feel the same about pipe tobacco. For now, I wish I could try them all.

Actually both of those. I like things simple. Hense why I like doing the one pipe for one year threads.

I don't do options well.

I luuuuv bacon
But I can’t imagine having bacon&eggs every day

At last count I had almost 60 blends open.
Having said that I find myself gravitating towards the same dozen blends more often than not.

The reason for having so many open blends is I’m still very much in the “exploring as many blends as I can” phase

Tastes change and blends I used to smoke regularly have been pushed to the back of my rotation
