Wonder what happened to cause the shank to be sawn? Or whatever caused the look.

Imagine having two identical pipes, the bowl cracked in one, and the shank cracked in another and thinking "what if I sawed them in half and made one pipe from two?"

Oh wow... I need that. It’s the extremely rare “two piece shank”. I think only one was made...
Freakin stupid... Amazing what people do to pipes.

Both pieces are from the same pipe. There was a break in the shank. Not a clean one. The two halves have been faced to remove the jagged edges, and then they were spliced together. I assume the tenon and mortise were broken as well, which would be the reason for the ugly replacement stem and nickel band.
Sure, it's ugly. Not a world class repair job by any means, but it got the pipe back on the job. For some guys, that's enough.
