Oh wow... I need that. It’s the extremely rare “two piece shank”. I think only one was made...
Freakin stupid... Amazing what people do to pipes.

Both pieces are from the same pipe. There was a break in the shank. Not a clean one. The two halves have been faced to remove the jagged edges, and then they were spliced together. I assume the tenon and mortise were broken as well, which would be the reason for the ugly replacement stem and nickel band.
Sure, it's ugly. Not a world class repair job by any means, but it got the pipe back on the job. For some guys, that's enough.
