I want to order an 8 oz. box of Cannon Plug...

...but, living under The Badger State's new 71% excise tax, I'd like to order it to a friend's address in another state -- a friend whom I hope to see in about 6 weeks.

I assume that the boxed Gawiths must sit in that condition for longer than that at retailers, right? It won't have dried out or lost much if its topping in that time, will it have?

I've ordered a scented Lakeland in box format only once before, and of course transferred to mason jars immediately, so I'm just not clear on how much mileage can be expected of the cellophane in the boxes.

Six weeks? Pffft! Will be just fine.

I’d say at least a couple years sealed, maybe longer. I purchased a jarred tin of Ennerdale with a group of things from around 2020 and it had lost a lot, maybe 80-90%, but luckily the base tobacco is fantastic anyways.

That's what a I figure with Cannon -- its base is Best Brown. And since Best Brown is a favorite, then anything between 0% and 100% topping is fine with me.

I am more cautious. I have had several of the plastic films tear due to shipping so I inspect immediately. If the film is intact, I would feel comfortable with several months, but not much longer. I had set a box aside and forgot about it for a year. When I jarred it, the plug was noticeably drier than usual.

No problemo.

Even if your pipe tobacco dries too much, you can rehydrate it by putting some lemon or orange peel in the jar; or dropping a couple of drops of brandy or whiskey in the jar, or if you need it quick; you an put it into a ziplock bag then blow into the bag before sealing, then repeating this over a couple of days.

I've brought to life tobaccos over 12 years old using these methods, and they lost nothing. In fact they had all gained from the aging process, as one would expect.

The issue is that I'd taken a break from pipe smoking and foolishly converted all my cellared pipe tobaccos such as the rare Frog Mortons and McClelland's Christmas blends of 2012; into snus. Absolutely criminal.

Kendal Plug is “slice it yourself” BBF.
As with any tobacco, the risk is a defect in the packaging. I opened a sealed box of ‘18 Kendal Plug last month and its inside heat sealed “baggie” was breached inside the cello wrapped box. It’s been rehydrating for weeks.
I hope the newer “deli trays” fare better, as I’ve got Cob (1792) Plug, and Firedance Plug stored back in their original wraps.
I haven’t invested in it, but I think Mylar would be the best bet. I’m aware I’m living dangerously with the original packaging.
