I could carry/smoke a pipe in public a little more. I will fly the flag proudly and more often.

Hails to that!
One other thing I thought about but am not sure how to do -- how to have a pipe visible on my person?
I guess I could start wearing shirts with pockets, although I've shied away from those since a pen accident some years ago and refuse to wear a pocket protector because I don't want to live up to (fully) the nerd stereotype.
Or maybe get a small one and tuck it behind an ear?

On the side of the house over the garage I have an enclosed porch. My house is across the street from a highly used park with a pond. Every evening I sit on my porch and have a bowl, sometimes two with my evening coffee. People walking by often look over. I nod, smile and go back to my pipe, my contentment obvious to all.

I don't know why but to go out and smoke the pipe feels like grand standing. I smoke in the car. I'll bring a pipe in the pocket while hitting the trail with my dog but rarely feel the need to smoke while doing so. I'll smoke my pipe when I want to.
The act of smoking a pipe is not a statement. If it feels good to do it in public go for it and you enjoy it. Just don't expect others to burn their bras while doing so. Most importantly, don't flick your pipe onto the ground like a cigarette smoker. That can get expensive ;)

I am a new pipe smoker. When I began smoking my pipe on breaks at work I have had a lot a people start asking a lot of questions. Or tell stories about a grandfather that smoked pipes. Everything has been favorable. Even a couple of the guys have express a lot of interest in getting pipes themselves now.

The act of smoking a pipe is not a statement.
Every act is a statement -- of values, and with that, of intent and somewhat of life philosophy.
And when you do not speak up, others speak for you.

A woman once walked up to me while smoking in my car @ the supermarket before going in and informed me that my pipe stunk and that she could smell it from her car. I politely told her if she doesn't like my smoke she could blow.

Well, I've had it with being politically correct. I smoke on the way to/from work in my car, and keep my pipe on my desk at work during the day. I smoke when walking in the neighborhood, or any other outing that seems appropriate. I'm not flaunting it in the faces of others, but I'm not going to try to hide, either. I posted a pic of me with my pipe on my Facebook page and got a majority of nice comments. A lot of people didn't know I smoked one previously.

I don't really enjoy smoking in public. While I might enjoy the bowl, I can sumpatize with others who do not. I often get irritated by people puffing away at cigarettes in paths where I must cross with my child, or cigar smokers outside cafes where every bite I grab tastes like tobacco.
I smoke where I know people can avoid sharing the experience if they wish with very little effort.

On the roof at work, I'll choose a more isolated corner, and those who don't mind or enjoy it join me of choice.
The issue at hand is not that pipes are disappearing due to under exposure, but rather that smoking is generally not popular due to a growing awareness of its potential ramifications.
It might be riddled with absurdity as other problems such as obesity or alcohol consumption are not addressed as harshly, but it's a part of the going trend of being extremely concerned with health, along with a lot of money spent on advertising the dangers of second hand smoking.
Granted we each have our poison of choice, be it coffee, nicotine, alcohol or other harmful meant of recreation, people and governments are placing a greater emphasis on tobacco these days.
I'd rather make smoking not an issue worthy of anymore attention by ensuring I subject only myself to the consequences and leave others to their choices.
Regardless, I like chilling when I smoke, and therefor doing it while occupied with anything else diminishes the experience, and so I usually choose a place where I can not be overly conscious of my surroundings and at a time of leisure.

I either don't evoke the anti-smoking ire when I am out and about, or I just fail to see it. That said, when I smoke, I don't create the amount of smoke that a cigarette creates. I am a breath smoker, so my smoke is barely visible and definitely doesn't carry in volume like a cigarette or cigar. I have gotten parents bringing their kids up to me to see my pipe, people ha e asked to set next to me to smell it, and questions, lots of positive questions. Yeh, maybe once or twice I've gotten the "look," but I don't let it ruin my day. All of the positive things I've seen outweigh anything negative. Maybe I just look cool, ha ha!

Ultimately, do what you want. I just think that if you get the itch and get out there, that something positive may happen. Maybe something negative, but don't dwell on it. If you look like you are enjoying yourself, people will become curious. Screw the nazis. Just enjoy yourself whether you get out and about with your pipe or not.

I guess I take a middle path: I try not to smoke anywhere that, if everyone did it, would ruin the utility of the space to others.
Someone mentioned a cafe... I like smoke at cafes, but only where I'm not getting my smoke whipped into others' faces.
I apply this rule to all things, including flatulence. There's no reason pipe smoking is unique except for the considerations of the smoke itself.
At the same time, if you're out in a public place where car exhaust and other environmental hazards are common, don't complain about my smoke. I include parks in this. Nothing is more stupid that someone wailing pipe smoke as they choke on diesel exhaust.
