So many things are detrimental to health.

Smoking is, but so is eating. Hell, you can choke to death on a ham sandwich
So is being in a car - I bet that doesn't stop you driving or travelling in cars.

All of us on the Forums are aware of the adverse effects of tobacco.
Don't piss against the wind. nnnn

Accidents versus personal choice to introducing poisons into one's system? I fail to see any similarity.
We all indulge in risk-taking every day - eating the "wrong" foods, drinking alcohol, smoking. Where do we stop ?

My point was that you can take all the care in the world to minimise harm to oneself, but some random event can wipe you out.

Some interesting comments here! I will mention a few quick things -

1) I find it interesting that so many of the comments are focusing on the first portion of my post that introduces who I am and provides background/reasoning into why I took the time to look into smoke filtration methods. I tend to think that if pipe smoking really is a hobby or lifestyle to be enjoyed in your own way, as so many here mention, there would be far fewer comments related to critiquing my choices around how I enjoy a pipe. (notice in my post I never once tell people that they "should" or "need to" use a filter. I believe that you should enjoy your hobby the way you want to).

2) Related to the above the fact that so many people focus on trying to explain away my attempts to live as healthy a lifestyle as possible, while making calculated trade offs, seems to indicate to me that I touched a nerve with some folks. Please realize that spotlighting my methods in my post is meant in no way to denigrate your methods.

3) Ultimately, I wanted to share some interesting research I found around charcoal filtration that could have some implications for pipe smoking as well for those who choose to use charcoal filtration and introduce myself in the process. I know there must be a few here on the forum.

4) I hope someone actually reads the research and finds it interesting. 143 of the words in my initial post are about my pipe smoking methods. 473 are devoted to the research. Would be a pity for those 473 to go to waste!

Finally some quick bullet points to address a few of the individual comments -

- I could find no filtration system for cigars, which was one of the big motivations for me to move to pipes!
- Yep, life inherently caries risk, some of which we can not avoid. However, for me, I still try to mitigate what I can. I love living life and have people who care about my existence. I will do what I can to stick around as long as possible while taking calculated and informed risks. (I don't own a car btw, not necessary in Japan)
- Camels while you ran?! Mister iron lungs over here!
- There are examples of people who stirred pesticide with their bare hands for a living prior to the introduction of modern farming techniques who lived into their 90s. I still wouldn't do it if you asked me to, though.
-apologies for not following the rules for my initial post. I noticed the Forum Rules and Terminology sticky at the top of the forums page after posting. I tried to edit my original post but couldn't change the initial message. It looks like a mod did it for me, Thank you!

Maybe smoking is only unhealthy for the sedentary and those whose only exercise is mouse-clicking. ?
Forgot to respond to this one! This is an interesting point and one that I think has some validity. I heard somewhere recently that around 300 minutes of exercise per week that elevates the heart rate can offset the negative side effects of moderate cigar smoking. I can't remember where exactly I heard this, however, and I do not have any research at hand to support the claim. Just something I heard! maybe I will look into this next!

That's very true and, incidentally, I admire your keen grasp of the obvious. I suppose you are saying, since we'll all die in the end healthy choices are a waste of time? I suppose one could use that for a rationale. An easy view for sure, no weighing of risk v reward, no research required. Death comes to us all so no care need be exercised. One doesn't need to look left or right before crossing the street. Why check to see if the chamber is empty, just turn it all over to fate. I kinda admire your outlook on life. Not for me but, if it suits you . . . go for it.

No, not at all.

I'm all for taking reasonable care and being responsible for our health and well-being. What I'm saying is despite all our efforts towards harm minimisation, we can still be blind-sided eg the person who has a healthy diet, keeps fit and in shape, goes for health checks regularly - but still has a heart attack because of a random acute heart arrythmia.

My mantra is to enjoy in moderation. Not much point being anal, if you're not overdoing it.

But then, I'm more a "glass half empty" person.

Welcome Dankpipez. I started as a once a week pipe smoker too. Enjoy, and proceed with due regard…however you perceive it.

Living in a war zone for a year taught me to take no unnecessary risk, but living through the pandemic has taught me to spare no reason for joy. I’m somewhere in the middle now with pipe smoking and enjoy in happy moderation.

Please put your location in your Profile, as people are forgetful.
Why:
That will save questions in the future as to where you live when you later mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos, wildfires, air quality, etc. In many instances that saves time for those who read your posts. It cuts down on posts or PMs asking where you are.
How:
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. province, etc.

I enjoy riding my motorcycle.
And I only do it while driving my automobile and I put the convertible top down.
And here's a study I found regarding the safety of bicycle helmet use.

I hope you enjoy. I had to use, like, 47 words or so.

Bicycle helmets are an incredibly important part of cycling safety. Also, don't forget to wear your seatbelt when you drive your convertible!

When I was a young copper, my Lieutenant and I ran four mile four days a week. We both smoked Camels as we ran. My observation then was, smoking makes it harder to keep in shape but, didn't prohibit such.
A doctor put it to me this way. Whatever your base line is for lung health or over all health smoking is going to drop it from there. Or in other words I've meet a few professionals that agree with you. At least in the short and mid terms in the long term it can wreck the lungs past the point of compensation.

you know what is a bigger factor then filtration which healthwise is nothing. Moderation which you seem to have down. I know a person whos life work is studying tobacco and health. Their feelings on filters of all kinds is they don't work. Any benefit they have is basically ruined by the fact they alter the way you smoke. And the way they're tested doesn't account accurately for that. In fact you can make a cigarette a light cigarette by putting little pinholes around the filter (like most light cigarettes have) which mixes more air in when hooked up to the machines they test the filtration with. Holes that get covered by fingers mostly when actually smoked. If you cover those holes suddenly the light cigarettes have similar tar and nicotine levels to full flavor cigarettes. Point if you're looking for health don't worry about a pipe even if you changed to once or twice a day and a filter isn't going to help your health. If you like how it smokes better with that filter go for it if you think you'll be in better shape it won't make a difference.
See the thing is you want the nicotine and the flavor a filter makes you puff harder. That cancels any positive effect it might have had. (and yes the whole smoke slow and keep your pipe smoldering thing, does reduce the amount of the bad things in smoke.)
