When I stumbled across this thread last night, it was just posted and there were no replies. I thought to myself, 'Myself, this will probably be locked in the morning'. Well here it is and not locked, good work guys!
As for the topic at hand, I really want to meet a flat-earther just to ask them how it would be possible to travel around the world and back to where you start if the earth was flat.

A guy I know who believes in the Bible wholeheartedly thus believes the earth is flat due to its authority. I taunted him about it a few weeks ago and wish I hadn't. He's a nice guy, and he is intelligent. I suppose there are many kinds of belief, in part due to the reasons they are adopted.

If you fall into that rabbit hole and its deep enough, will you come out on the bottom of the flat earth, or just fall straight through into space?

Since the outcome of such falling is undefined, I favor the flat earth version that entails falling into space.

I simply dismiss them as pathetic attention seekers, much in the same vein as the social justice warrior types who take it upon themselves to be "offended" on behalf of others. One can't possibly believe in a flat Earth and still have enough brain power to draw breath; it just doesn't happen.

"The Bible itself (Is 40:22) says that the Earth is round, which means anyone who believes otherwise is, as it were, a heretic."
The Bible has a lot of interesting things to say about a lot of stuff. I don't take it for a scientific treatise. The Catholic Church, however, did exactly that for centuries. Anywhere they had the power to, they murdered people who did not. You know, because they were heretics. The Catholic Church was not antagonistic toward learning; you were free to learn as much as you wanted about what the church believed. It got so bad, in fact, that many people left the church, seeking the freedom to oppress people who didn't believe their dogma.

After the election of President "Smocking Gun" I'm convinced Americans aren't as smart as I thought we were before 2016. It's astounding the kind of things some lunatic says and even more astonishing how many idiots believe it.

Get used to it. Apparently he's our man through 2022. Yes, we are increasingly impoverished, stupid and illiterate, as almost no one values reading. writing and analytical thought.

The Earth is Flat!! Y'all are all wrong!
I kid. I think most of the flatearthers dont even believe its flat. They do it just to argue something. I think they fall into the same group as the people who dont believe we landed on the moon and the mars rover is sitting in the Arizona desert. I weep for humanity.

As a teen, active in my church, I remember that this was an ongoing Sunday school debate in the early 80's, as well as dinosaurs. There were two lines of thought in the Baptist Church at that time; the Bible was absolute and the Bible was based on the science of the time it was written. But, I remember men leading us through discussions about how the stars revolved around the Earth, and how airplanes wouldn't work on a spherical planet. As a teen, I was intrigued. But, as I went off to college, I remember our youth pastor pleading with me to stay involved so that I wouldn't fall prey to the heretical sciences of college. I would say that 2% is a very low number. There are probably people who were inspired by their churches of that era of teaching that just don't debate the issues, but quietly hold those beliefs, or just don't care enough to discuss it. They believe in angels, demons, conspiracies... But really, we can scoff at these people, but there are just as many implausible beliefs held by the greater general public that are just as insane when held up to the light of reason.
Me, I can't believe in trees, because trees are real. :puffy:
