Maybe KW did something like Linkman did when it came to number stamps. On a Linkman,a letter following the number usually indicated a variation of a basic shape. "A" might mean tapered stem, "B" a saddle bit stem.

That looks incredible! I have a 98S on the way and I hope it looks as great as yours. If not I may send it to you to work your magic. The 98S has a saddle bit; but I have a hard time seeing the difference between the 98 and 99 bulldogs.

Great work and a very good looking pipe. Wonderful shape, one of the most beautiful bulldogs i've ever seen by the way.
