Might Stick Around

Hi All,
I decided to try my hand at pulling some dents out of a few of my stems by applying heat to them (heat gun, lighter). Good news, the dents came out :) Bad news, on on of the stems, by the lip, the rubber began to melt/bubble, and on another stem, though the appearance didn't change at all, I began to smell burning rubber (and see a tiny bit of smoke come up). Of course, I immediately stopped at these signs.
Does anyone know what might be the easiest way to repair a tiny bit of burnt rubber, and if it's possible to get the stem to its original condition without a buffing wheel? Also, on the stem where I began to smell burning, has any damage been done? The stem looks basically good as new, but I always begin to worry when I get a smell like that, or see smoke.
Gotta be more careful in the future I guess! Thanks in advance.

There are others much more qualified than me on this site, but I would begin with 400 grit wet/dry sand paper and move up progressively to 600, 800 and maybe 1000. Finish off with jewelers rouge or some other type of polish like MAAS or Flitz.
