Yeah pipes over $1000 simply not fit on me, too pricy. Still can't imagine, is it could make smoke taste like dream?

I believe that above a certain price level no significant improvement in the smoking properties no longer occurs. The rest is prestige, the more famous the pipe maker becomes, the more he can charge for his pipes. For example, I have a pipe by Tom Eltang that he designed when he was still employed by Stanwell. It cost $54 used.

At smoking pipes I have seen his model ('the egg') for $1,200.00

Seems you have tons of pipe collection there..beautiful stuff!

Yes I believe so, it more an aesthetic aspect than smoking properties..or for worst just a brand up charge.

Oh, I'm far from it, but when I saw your pictures, I remembered that I also have an old Georg Jensen pipe. I bought it in a small tobacco store in Ffm. around 1976 (Pictures below). It wasn't expensive, doesn't look super great, has fillings , but it is handmade, passes a pipe cleaner easily, is very light and any tobacco tastes good in it. I noticed that I always automatically reached for this pipe when I didn't know which one to smoke next, even though I've had a few higher quality pipes.

I think I've blathered on enough now though.

Have fun with your pipes!

Agree, my Georg Jensen is my regular pipe, its smoke really great. It wasn't expensive too but really a warhorse..beside I really love canadian shape family.

Handmade Georg Jensen is the special edition line up right?

By the way I just break in my Winslow with reiner golden flake..I'm really impressed how it lit so stable. Less tamping, less relight. Borrowing term from bnichols, it smoke stellar!

Really? Nothing special about the smoking properties?
Any well drilled pipe with a clear unobstructed airway will smoke like any other. They're little more than pretty drinking straws. Any difference in smoking quality is the technique of the smoker and not the pipe.

Yeah the smoker technique put bigger portion on the smoking quality. Sometime how smoker do an adaptation with their non good quality pipe (let say off centered draft hole) still could resulting a nice smoking experience..more and less it's all just like pretty drinking straw, but some specific aspect like chamber size, draft hole size, depth of bowl, straight or bent must play the role.
I read about Sixten Ivarsson pipe left around 10 minute and still lit. It may supported by many factor like wind, humidity etc, but not every shape, sizes will result the same I believe.
Unfortunately those guy didn't mention his pipe specification.

That only affects the length of the smoke.

That's all about packing. I can sit a lit pipe down to make coffee, check the mail, etc. and still come back to a lit pipe.

By my experience its easier to maintain lit in medium size chamber or bigger than the small one. I was guessing it's because the more bigger the chamber the more better oxygen fill/flow to reach the ember.

You adjust the packing to compensate for that.?
