I've started to be more curious about non-latakia blends, and have a definite affinity for Bayou Morning. Seeing the popularity of OGS, I ordered my first can last week.

Rubbed out (more than) enough for a bowl, then let it sit out for about 3 hours. It didn't seem too wet in the tin, and after the 3 hours, it was just about as dry as anything I've smoked before.

Just finished the bowl, and all I can say is: wow there's no flavor at all.

The last 1/3 was a little sweeter, but on the whole, it was bland as cardboard. I smoked it in a billiard, fairly small opening.

of particular concern is the tin's statement about it containing Perique (which sure tastes like a vast overstatement)...bc I've also recently purchased 100gm of St James Woods.

Please, gentle pipers, correct, uphold, chide, chastise or encourage as you see fit. For now my plan is to try the OGS in a different pipe, then likely trade it for something will balls like Bayou Morning or Old Joe.

The myth of perique in OGS ruins for a lot of pipers and causes much debate within the community. If it has any its minuscule, IMHO. It's a light Virginia. If you're coming from Latakia land, then yes, it's bland, but it's all there. I go against convention and I smoke Virginias in a pot shaped pipe.
Good luck.

I love subtle blends, and smoke lots of virginias, va/bur and va/per blends. To me, OGS is the most boring tobacco I think I've every come across. It isn't bad, but it if you have to imagine something having flavor, it's maybe a little TOO subtle. I have 1 tin in the cellar.

There is something to say about palate change. I originally tried OGS a decade ago and thought it was bland and not anything special, wrote it off and went on to other things. A few months ago I received a tin thrown in with a trade and decided to try it again. I have to say the flavor is there when your palate gets adjusted. Although it is very one note and consistent throughout the bowl. Which may be exactly what some love about it.
I have started cellaring it. I find it a very nice change from my latakia blends when I need a straight, no nonsense, sweetly citrus virginia to cleanse/refreshen my palate.

One more thing, I don't like it rubbed out at all. It burns a bit hot and bland.
I will only cube cut it . . . or when i don't have a scissors on hand I will fold and stuff, but cube cut to me is preferred and brings out the best flavor.

I think my expectations have changed/ altered/ grown as well. I'll try it again in a different pipe, rest my thoughts a few weeks and try it again. My first time with 965, I was sure it was just shredded car tires; now its one of my favorites.

Thats a bit of excessive dry time for OGS, it usually will only need 30 mins or so and is about "goldilocks" from the tin. But I have to agree with your sentiment, Im not a fan either. A lot of people love it but its just not for me...

Light Virginias take some getting used to, especially if you've cut your teeth on Latakia blends. FWIW, I love VAs, but I'm not a fan of OGS. I especially don't like the orange/citrus flavor (did you not get any of that?). Then again, I really don't like most Danish-style VAs. It's possible they're not your thing, either, especially if you're enjoying Bayou Morning.

jmagen, I agree with you. OGS tastes like a cigarette to me as well, but then again I like mostly full, rich flavored tobaccos with DFK, latakia, Lakeland's, and VaPer's with a nice dose of perique. I'm with you on Bayou Morning as well and I think you will enjoy St. James Woods, I get the best flavor from rubbing it out just a little.

I also enjoy Mixture 79 every once in a while, so take that for what it's worth.

Smoke what you like!

OGS was the first mostly Virginia blend I tried, and it was an instructive change from the full strength high nic blends I was doing for adventure. Rather than seeming bland, I picked up on the subtlety and nuance. It may not be the star among Virginia leaf, but it certainly served as an intriguing introduction for me. I still enjoy the occasional tin, and smoke it up fairly fast. Once you discover McClelland, you are into the mother lode of Virginia blends.

Based on my experience with Orlik Golden S, I'd rather be cautious and not to overdry it otherwise it will get harsh, personally I like the taste, maybe a little bit cigarettish(as a former cig smoker this characteristic doesn't bother me at all-perhaps opposite, yet the Swedish Graf Gilbert Hamiltons Blending pipe tobacco has the same sort of initial taste)I better fold&stuff this Orlik or cube cut it,moreover as for years now the OGS is still one of the most popular blend among Danish pipesmokers.I like this little spice and liquorish yet orange taste in it ,a good light/medium strong blend with affordable price(in the U.S the retailing price is about half of that in europe)

I find OGS to be pretty flavorful, with the aforementioned grassy/hay/tangy citrus flavor. But to me, Escudo tastes like damp cardboard, and that's when I get any flavor from it at all. There is much body/mouth chemistry at work here.

I think it is a very nice tasting Va. but I don't dry it at all. I normally just fold and stuff straight from the tin.

Some people like toppings on their pizza while others are content to focus on the quality of the basic ingredients. And if you are used to sausage and peppers, I can see how plain cheese could leave you wanting. Haha

You're wasting your time trying it in a different pipe. Just trade it for something with balls.

Isn´t it strange how differently we taste tobaccos? I am coming from Latakia too (and still like Lat-heavy blends) but I think that OGS is the finest VA that I ever tried. Can´t get enough from it and it is my go-to blend. I don´t recommend drying it and I only fold it.
